I picked up a Japanese Saturn and KOF95, with cart, in a Japanese bargain bin in 06. I was a poor student in Kyoto and a Saturn was the only game console I could afford since many games sold for just ¥100 each. But damn it was awesome. The guy next door had a PS2, but I got just as many over to my dorm room to play Saturn as he did to play PS2.

I agree that this is a top notch channel, but I'm curious on what basis would you say that he's "the best"? To be clear, I'm aware that that's one of those "impossible arguments" that can't actually have an answer due to its inherently subjective nature. He's far from the most in-depth (My Life in Gaming, Digital Foundry, Square Eyed Jak, so so many are much more in depth). I'm sure you'll agree that this isn't the "funniest" gaming channel (Larry Bundy Jr and Square Eyed Jak and Rerez and many others make humor a main part of the content, unlike SegaLord). What's left? Sure, it's very entertaining, but if your criteria is "the one that entertains me the most", I hope you are aware of how divisive that is. That's the can of worms you open when you state extremely generalized opinions like that. At the end of the day though, I know you're just sharing your opinion, but so am I, and I'm pointing out that the reasons you are using to make this your favorite gaming channel are likely very good reasons that this is NOT the best gaming channel. That's the magic of the internet though, there doesn't HAVE to be a "best channel". A big part of the problem with giving compliments in the way you have is the diversity of gamers, after all, and that's actually a good thing. We shouldn't have to agree on what is a "best gaming channel" because different channels are better for different people. Retro gaming is such broad topic anyway. Heck, if you're really a gaming enthusiast, your favorite retro gaming channel might be modders like Voultar and not even a "retrospective" channel like this.

But then I was a PlayStation card and it really wasn’t much of the Saturn that really appeal to me but I went ahead and bought it anyway a used Saturn, ram cart and a copy X-men v Street Fighter when electronics boutique had sold Japanese games in store. When I played it at home I was blown away as it was damn near arcade perfect. I was so impressed that I return do you Saturn bought it new that came with three games, two extra controllers, the multi tap, and I bought Saturn Bomberman. I wish Cyberbots' console ports got English releases, because while the Arcade original is, the console versions also added new content like a mech based on Akuma, and 3 new pilots (who were already in the Arcade game as NPCs but now have their own stories). I don't think any of that is in the recent Capcom Arcade collection either.
@dariusq8894

The Saturn port of Cyberbots is the definitive version IMO because of the additional content, most notably the extra playable characters. Princess Devilotte and her Super-8 octopus mech is my favorite but fans are probably most familiar with Mecha Akuma/Gouki.

I remember the day that the MK2 port was released in the stores such as Electronic Boutique. It was such a disappointment for something that should have been more than an Arcade perfect conversion. If they worked hard to make the game arcade perfect and packaged in MK1, it would have sold aplenty even though it arrived well after the 16-bit releases. If I remember, the only MK I purchased on the Sega Saturn was Ultimate MK3, which was a spectacular conversation (perfect even). It was so good that if you were excellent on the Saturn version, you could easily conquer the arcade version as well.

I still have Mortal Kombat 2 on the Saturn, and here's an issue that I found with it. Any Fatality that requires you to start holding a button during the fight is impossible to pull off as the timer resets at "Finish Him!" Mileena's man eater (3 seconds) is still possible. Both of Raiden's fatalities (6&8 seconds) or Shang Tsung's Kintaro morph (25 seconds) I've never been able to do. Stick with the 32x in this case.

I like this series a lot. I really loved having a Saturn when it was current because arcade games were my main interest in those days. There were plenty of console exclusives, some of them quite fantastic like Dragon Force, but I always would go back to arcade and arcade-style games as the core of my library. In the early days of the Saturn, I was more about 3D because it was the new thing. Sega was really good at 3D arcade game design then. Later in the system's lifespan, I gravitated back toward 2D largely thanks to the RAM cart games, with fighters being a big part of that, with Marvel Superheroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown 4, and King of Fighters 97 being highlights for me. I know where you're coming from with the approach to Fighting Vipers compared to Virtua Fighter 2. I didn't have Fighting Vipers, but when I had Fighter Megamix, I wished it had Virtua Fighter 2's resolution. On the flip side, I wished VF2 had Megamix's additional graphics effects. I see in the notes part three is coming. I know KOF '97 and Virtual On are already on your radar, but I do look forward to those two. I've been recently playing Virtual On 2 for Dreamcast and have been having a lot of fun. The original was one of the true highlights of my Saturn library. It's also one of my favorite gaming memories because I saw a TV commercial for the game and just thought it looked cool without knowing what it was. Because it was a Sega arcade game, I trusted it would likely be good so I bought it not knowing what to expect and it turned out to be different from what I thought, but more fun than I imagined. KOF '97 was a great gaming memory for me too, but I've shared that one before.

The SS MKII port had slowdown/loading everytime u did a fatality or a special move for the 1st time in a match without mentioning the damn micro-loadings for shang tsung transformations (the bane of every CD based port if i m correct)...gfx were good and quite faithful to the arcade though

Even with just the standard 2mb ram the game should have turned out better than it did with both graphics and sound and the little pauses never should have happened too.

Damn, I use to love Akclaim, especially Team Iguana back in the day. I had MK2 on the 32X so I didn't bother with the Saturn version. The 32X MK2 was solid, characters were a bit small for it's time but they were clean. I think the background was the Genesis version with foreground and characters updated using the 32X power. On the Saturn had MK 3 Ultimate which solid besides the mesh transparency on some the characters like Smoke.

DF retro did a deep dive on this. The backgrounds were drawn by the Mega Drive, but because the mega drive wasn’t doing anything else like characters and UI, they were able to use more colours. They have done a whole breakdown on each 32X game and what was done by the ad on and what was done by the main system. On some games it’s really surprising how little the 32x actually does. Knuckles Chaotix is basically a 16 bit game with the 32 X only doing some Sprite work for scaling effects and the 3D bonus stage. The videos are super interesting they did.
@hababacon
@hababacon 2 жыл бұрын
@@sloppynyuszi I can believe it as the backgrounds appears to have the Genesis limited color capabilities complete with dithering. When you think about the 32X and Genesis graphics processing, it's almost the exact way the Saturn uses VDP1&2. Using emulators you can turn off each VDP and segments of the screen will disappear a lot like the Genesis and 32X. Like I've heard the Saturn 3D hardware was bolted on at the last minute making making a 2D system 3D, again similar to the 32X Genesis. Sega in the 90s were weird with two hardware teams always competing against each other.
@maroon9273
@maroon9273 2 жыл бұрын
@@sloppynyuszi Competition sega had with each other. Made them to lose a lot of money. Sega should've choose either one hardware design for the Saturn (Non-compatible Saturn Project or Backward compitable Saturn Project) or a cleaner/efficient 2D/3D design.
@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi 2 жыл бұрын
@@maroon9273 Sega is over rated with their hardware. They never implemented tech that could imitate their Arcades properly. The Mega Drive didn’t have any scaling capabilities, and when the Mega CD add on did, no one implemented it. Why wasn’t even one super scaler arcade ported to the Mega CD? It’s crazy that Sega and Namco basically pioneered the arcades with 3D games and Sega made the Saturn 3D capabilities a last minute thing. Like how do you create Daytona, and not have a home system be able to play a descent home conversion of it. It’s like comparing Master System altered beast to the Arcade. And when they finally became a third party company they segmented their games across three platforms, so it was impossible to have all the Sega games without owning the 3 main consoles. They published and developed some of my all time favourite games, but their business strategy made it very hard to stay a Sega fan.
@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi 2 жыл бұрын
@@hababacon I think as an add on, it’s smart to use a combination of the two systems. I think the 32X is under rated. It’s also a shame the cartridge slot on the Saturn couldn’t play them. It would incentivise more games for it than. It would be the 90s equivalent of the master system card slot, where the smaller games came.

If you wanted great arcade conversions and didn't want to spend a fortune on a Neo Geo in the 90's, Sega's consoles had some of best of them! Between the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast, there were a number of excellent arcade ports! The Saturn was an absolute 2D powerhouse and had so many arcade gems (though, many were Japanese-exclusive). I actually owned Fighting Vipers on the Saturn, but had never played the arcade version. I still think it is a fantastic fighting game and well worth checking out!

With regards to Fighting Vipers I think that it got the most important bit into the game which was the 3D fence without it the game wouldn't have felt like Fighting Vipers since the gameplay partially relies on it.

I love Night Striker. I've always thought about buying the Saturn version, but I already have it on Sega CD, PS1, and later got it again on one of the Taito Memories compilations, so there are already 3 versions in my home. I wish the Saturn version had the special remix of the Sega CD version soundtrack as well, because that version looks so rough...

Excellent. In hindsight, only being in a position to have one Gen 5 console (I'm 10 years younger than SLX) I don't regret going with a PlayStation over a Saturn or N64, especially in North America. However, as an adult with access to Japanese games, I play my Saturn a lot more than I do PS1. Having kids, I spend a lot more time playing fighting games, Shmups, and Beat-em-Ups than long single player adventures, so the Saturn gets most of my modern 5th Gen play.

I consider myself lucky that I chose the Saturn in 1995. It definitely was the right fit for me. I eventually got a used PS1 as a secondary system when the Saturn market dried up in 1998 so I was covered there and I liked it. But I was so into the Saturn's arcade ports and arcade-style originals like Panzer Dragoon. I've since gravitated back toward those quicker, intense, arcade-style experiences in the genres you mentioned. Beat-em-ups are my favorite. Fighting games are among the most satisfying short experiences out there and the Saturn is a great system for many of those home ports. I don't know if you've played it, but Virtual On is one of my favorite Saturn arcade ports and it can be quite satisfying in a very short play session. It takes a bit of adjustment at first learning the controls and strategy. I've been playing the Dreamcast sequel in recent days and have been having a blast. Virtual On for the Saturn is one of my favorite gaming memories because I bought the game after seeing TV commercials without knowing what it was but thinking it looked cool while I trusted in Sega's arcade development. It was way more fun than I expected.
