Disagree about the FMV cutscenes... they're fantastic! It's a 1995 game so with the digitized sprites and cheesy B-Movie acting in the FMV this game is clearly a product of its time, and I love it. Sure it would have been amazing to have a handrawn 32-bit Shinobi utilizing all the Saturn hardware can offer, but this game has massive amounts of charm. Comfort food? Comfort GAMING.

I don't like this syle of digitised graphics, I never did. But this game does not look half bad. SEGA probably wanted to prevent reviewers to write that it looked like a 16 bit game. It was always like this, not matter how good a game looked, if it was 2D using regular pixel art then they would write "you could do it on a Super Nintendo" or some other nonsense.
@SegaLordX6 жыл бұрын
Very much so. Sega almost for sure went digitized to make the game "look 32-bit". A side effect of the times and the push for polygon supremacy.
@bowmanencore3 жыл бұрын
Probably my favorite Shinobi now. I prefer it over Shinobi III due to the greater focus on story. Compared to Revenge of Shinobi, it's far less shuriken-based, and your character isn't a slug. Shadow Dancer is neat, but insta-death is a constant threat from pretty much everything. Not saying those are bad, but I'm glad we got a different experience with Shinobi X. Options are always good, and this one is definitely different enough to warrant a look.
@AllardRT3 жыл бұрын
The game might not be as great as Revenge or Shinobi III but it's still pretty solid (especially with the EU OST) and I appreciate it being there. In an era when Sega decided not to continue any of its Genesis mainstays, it gives me something to instantly connect with on the Saturn.

I have always had a soft spot for this one. It was one of the first Saturn games I bought, and despite the dated look, it still holds up fairly well. One thing you didn’t mention is that Sega didn’t actually do this game, they only published it. It was actually farmed out to Vic Tokai. I think both soundtrack versions are solid, though I actually like the somewhat muted, understated OST of the JPN/US releases, because the music fits the atmosphere and setting of the game. And yeah, it’s super hard. That mine cart level is brutal, and the later vine jumping level is no better. I still haven’t managed to beat it, but I pull it off the shelf every so often to give it another go.

Actually, Sega jointly developed it with a company called Tose in Japan. Vic Tokai only published the game in North America. Sega published it everywhere else.

Sega Lord X I didn’t play it at the time it came out but more than a decade later by which time I couldn’t get on with the camera - I’ll give it another shot though on your advice as well as Nightshade which is in my never played pile of shame. Both Ninja gaiden games of the 2000s had better worlds (particularly the first one with its secrets and intertwined areas) and better combat (there isn’t a better way in all of gaming to make yourself feel like a badass than to wade into a crowd in Ninja gaiden 2 destroying all in front of you in a kinetic and brutal explosion of movement ).

I personally don't really think a hand-drawn Shinobi on Saturn would have really helped Sega all that much. I agree it would like nicer for posterity sake, but Sega actually made the more progressive move in terms of art design (at that time). The FMVs are super weird though.
@lightdark286 жыл бұрын
Interestingly the guy who did the soundtrack for Shinobi X also did the music for Sonic R , as well as a some others like Headhunter on the Dreamcast. Sadly this is one game Ive never played, the PAL version in particular is quite expensive
@SegaLordX6 жыл бұрын
I think NA collectors are to blame for that. There are a ton of them going after the PAL release.
@lightdark286 жыл бұрын
That may well be true, though keep in mind that the PAL Saturn market is quite an expensive one, since the console kind of flopped in PAL territories too (unlike the SMS and MD, which were massive) Ive even seen relatively rubbish Saturn games like Whizz go for £25. Of course, games like VF2 or Sega Rally are still very cheap.
@amerigocosta74526 жыл бұрын
Sega Lord X, there are many PAL games NA collectors would never think about buying but they still cost an arm and a leg. On top of that, many gamers and collectors in Europe don't even collect PAL stuff (I do, but I understand who does not want to deal with 50Hz anymore). That's how PAL regions were and still are. During the 80's and 90's games had outrageous prices in Europe for many reasons. The biggest factor was that most European countries had a pathetic purchasing power when it came to foreign goods like most videogames were (that was well before the introduction of the euro as currency). So, at the same time you guys in NA were purchasing one NES cartrige after the other, we were playing mostly cheap or pirated games on home computers (the majority of them made locally in Europe)! As a result, everything PAL tends to be rarer, more expensive and it's often scalped as hell.
@SegaLordX6 жыл бұрын
I understand that, but it wasn't a blanket statement on the climate of PAL retro games. What I meant to convey is that typically the in house, Sega made games were often the most produced games for their systems. They always tend to be cheap. The VF's, Fighting Vipers, Daytona, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop's, Nights, Manx TT's, etc. of the world. Once the game started getting some notoriety here in NA, the focus shifted to the exclusive soundtrack of Shinobi X, shooting that games price up incredibly. Combine that with the natural rarity of Saturn games, and boom, expensive game. Shinobi X is often one of the most common PAL games to see on a collectors Saturn shelf over here. Even I have a disc of it, and I don't collect PAL games for anything.
@lightdark286 жыл бұрын
I have to wonder if thats also part of the reason why the PAL version of Deep Fear is also crazy expensive (its at £200 and sometimes more) , a game that didn't even get a US release and was late, thus the insane price. The PAL market is quite alien to US gamers , lots of Amiga and Atari ST stuff, SMS being dirt cheap and common , SNES being relatively rare and quite expensive.

It was at it's worst at the launch of the game. We didn't know about the level select then. So you had to play back up to the frustrating levels every single time you played. It was brutal. Once we knew the level select and 99 lives code, it mitigated the worst of it.
@SEGAHEADDY3 жыл бұрын
@@SegaLordX Exactly! I kept dying on the insanely difficult final level and would have to play through the earlier levels a hundred times to get back to the final level just to practice it... and those earlier levels were now a cakewalk so it was a total waste of time getting back there. I think you went a bit easy on this game (I still have my European copy). Setting aside all the things you already pointed out that have made it age poorly compared to the 16-bit Shinobi games (digitized graphics , terrible cut scenes), what I dislike most is the controls. They just feel "off" in that same way the control in Sonic 4 felt wrong compared to the original games. The jump and spin jump are too floaty and the attacks (on regular enemies) never really feel like they connect. It's missing many moves from Shinobi III, such as the run attack and the downward jumping kick move. And the level layouts are really bland. BTW, I don't have a second Saturn controller... what happens if you plug that in before launching the game?

Emuparadise has stopped sharing games, fuck you Nintendo. Thankfully I have most of the games I love already downloaded and I am backing them up

Funny because I remember thinking how amazing it looked only to cringe today.

I own the Japanese version, it's an average game with uninspired level design, nice graphics and sound but not the best, very good new sword skills but bad ninjutsu skill. The real actor videos have low quality but they can be interested if you are into b-movie and trash. A big step back compared to Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III (I haven't played Shadow Dancer yet but I will in the next weeks)

This might be the best "bad" game ever made.

Turn the music sucks so bad compared to Shinobi 3 on Genesis

This game is so incredibly and profoundly ugly. It looks like something a 9 year old threw together with some Windows 95 jpgs.

This game sucked even at its time, so much it looks like a CD-i game.
