UTAH 5003 is one of only 6 MK5000Cs built by Morrison-Knudsen Rail which was acquired by Motive-Power Industries and later Wabtec. Anyways,Morrison-Knudsen only built 6 prototypes(3 of which are functional-The other 3 were just frames that were never finished) with 3 on the SP around 1994 and 3 on the UP on demonstration trials but both railroads weren't pleased with them and they were returned to MPI then ended up on Wabtec as leaser units.

and sold to Kyle in 2017 when the coal contracts expired. As of now Utah Rail has merged with two other G&W short lines The Salt Lake Southern and the Savage and Garfield they also do switching at Provo and the railroads former shops in Helper. If the line to the Deserato is built they will have a third line and they will mostly be hauling oil and bentonite which is what they haul out of their Helper yard.

When are these trains fueled? Is there a certain point in the very rural areas such as the Martin yard where freight trains pick up the diesel. I get that both Ogden and Salt Lake have underground tanks holding 1000’s of gallons. The West bound Zephyr. for example, I’m sure fuels in Denver, can that fuel load take them all the way to Salt Lake or even further?

Utah Railway has dedicated fuel tanks at Martin, but trains rarely go there now that the coal contracts have been canceled. Union Pacific and Utah Railway use trucks to fuel trains in Provo and Ogden. I'm not sure about the California Zephyr, but I know it is fueled in Salt Lake City both east and westbound.

ERA Films I wish I had taken the Zephyr Denver to Sacramento, with the switch in Salt Lake City from the Union Pacific/Rio Grande to Western Pacific with those really beautiful engines having the smooth rounded curves instead of today's unappealing box types. I recall, as a little kid, taking the neighbors down to the old Provo station so they could catch the California Zephyr onto Sacramento. The cars having the stainless steel exteriors were amazing under the station lights, just a beautiful train. I will always be tied to the Provo yard, since I tried to catch a train and run away with my friend Brent. I was 3-4 he was 3, I walked he was on his trike. We made it to State street and we're waiting for a break in the traffic. Some guy hauling gravel saw us, he knew my family and forcibly picked us up. I'm not sure if we had the way to hop on a freight car, worked out, but we were headed wherever the freight car would take us.v

only train that goes up there is HUTAH which is a local that switches a gas well.
