I've heard the movement is 4r36 in which the day of the week part is repurposed as a GMT function. This is why 4r34 is a date only movement and in the more affordable price range. Spot on review of the watch. It is quite appealing visually, indeed.

The iconic look! Indeed, a timepiece I could sport, but it's purely for display. It mimics a diver's watch with a 100m water resistance. It would set me back around 500 Irish Dirhams over here. Quite pricey for a 100m WR. In the past, Seiko 5 watches were intended to be budget-friendly variants of Seiko, albeit with certain features missing. While these features are still absent, the cost has risen. I too love jubilee bracelets.

I understand it doesn’t tick all the boxes for the modern standards for a dive watch (the Fifty Fathoms was only rated to fifty fathoms) but I’ve seen guys on Instagram diving with that very watch so it is actually dive capable. I don’t know if someone should necessarily buy it if they want the optimal GMT watch, or the optimal dive watch, but what I will say is that I think it is a rightful heir to the SKX with its very decent jubilee bracelet and its good looks, as you well stated.

The jube has its places, but on a Seiko it looks out of place on a diver platformed watch, let alone a full blown diver. My dad has been wearing this watch in orange dial for over a year including the winter while having an office job. He's an odd bloke but he loves it. You'll wanna measure your wrist between 2 and 4pm to get the most accurate sizing for any watch. Nothing is worse than having a tight watch in the morning, or a loose watch in the arvo. Changing watches mid-day and having a super tight fit while not having time to adjust the microadjust is a bummer. Having said that I've never measured my wrist. Being hairy means all watches fit tighter, it's like having a layer or two of glad wrap around your wrist when it comes to wristwatches.

One would think good luminescence would be a selling feature of a watch. Maybe the brands think that putting bad luminescence on a watch will influence the buyer to spend more money on a watch with better luminescence.

I think seiko is beginning to skimp on lume in the seiko 5 range. Most seiko 5 buyers are probably college kids. Look at the seiko 5 marketing. They’re targeting hip young people not old guys like me with lume fetishes.

My old watches from many years back, before I "got into watches", have the luminescence everyone dreams of. Things have changed and the entire industry simply doesn't care, it influences us all indeed. Even my Fossil's lumi sustains.

Islander makes a Port Jefferson GMT with that 9075. If I remember correctly it’s somewhere around $500 right now.
