For some melodies the clock plays like barrel organ (mechanical device that plays melody on flute like pipes of different heights) and for some melodies the clock plays like music-box (a mechanical device that plays melody by picking the toothed comb of metal) and for some melodies the clock plays like miniatured player piano (a mechanical device that plays melody on stretched strings of different lengths). Some antique mechanical clocks played melodies for each hour on such mechanisms built into it. On those days clock makers took much hard efforts to make such clocks. Nowadays we find easy to record music from such mechanical devices in electronic circuit board of sound chips, connect to speaker and install in quartz clocks.

Your speaker my be dying, I’d recommend you replace it, you could most likely find a for parts listing with a good speaker and the rest is a matter of some quick soldering :)
