I do not understand all this debate on size. If my wrist size does not fit to a watch size, being it the case diameter or the lug-to-lug width, then it is not the right watch for me ... full stop. We cannot blame a watch for being too big, we can only blame ourselves for having bought the wrong watch. The SARX has its audience as has the SARB.

I must admit i don't agree on all negatives you mentioned. I do so with respect, an opinion is just that. For me, the size is spot on. The hands are long, so the meet the markers. The crown is a little bigger, so it handles easy. The dial is clean and has little amount of writing, unlike a Rolex that has too much. I don't think the brand name is oversized, but i would prefer the font used on the old " King Seiko's " . Thanks for your review.

I agree with you 100% I so wish the 36-38 mm was the norm like 40-44mm are these days I tend to only buy vintage now since they’re the size I prefer, aside from a few new pieces I own most are sub 40 and when I find a new watch that fits my standards and I think looks good, I basically lose my head and end up buying it ASAP haha

The centre links and the lugs pair up together in an angular fashion, and the side links pairs with each other. So it's round and angular every other. I think it looks great, and the bracelet is the nicest I've ever seen. It somehow feels darker, like titanium without the light weight feel. I own this and bought it after seeing your review - you did not scare me off. The super AR is ridiculously good.

I have the SARX033 - the white dial version with blued hands. And I'm absolutely in love with this watch. Some of your negatives are positives for me. I actually love the size. I think it's perfect - at least for my 7+ inch wrists. The bracelet with it's flush sitting clasp is the best bracelet Seiko does in the higher mid segment. The finishing of the case and bracelet of the SARX033/035 are the next best thing to the modern Grand Seikos or even much pricier Swiss watches. I also have the SARB033 and SARB035. While I still very much like those two watches, they are really not comparable (besides the movement) to the SARX033/035 which are in their own class and really are luxury jewelery pieces. The more than twice as high price compared to the SARB's is absolutely justified. The only thing differentiating these SARX' from a Grand Seiko (at least 6 times the price) is the movement (Spring Drive or High Beat). These SARX' are currently real bargains IMHO.

Not twice the price anymore. $450 for the SARB033 new, and $750 for a new SARX035. The extra $300 is well worth it imho and if you place the two side by side, there is no doubt which watch is superior. Better band, super clear coating, no lume = dressier, better polish and finish.

Great review Patrick! I own the SARX035 and love it. I actually really like the bracelet. Wears extremely well and I do like the squared off center links contrasting the rounded outer links...to me gives it a visually appealing look. I don't particularly look at this as a dress watch, but more of an everyday wartch...kinda like a Datejust 41 or a 41mm Aqua Terra. I have owned both of those watches in the past and think this one is in the same style. The only thing I don't love is (as you had mentioned) is the size of the Seiko logo on the watch face. Keep up the honest reviews...really refreshing for a change!

I think the key comments are when you say "absolute stunner" and "so gorgeous," and the quibbles are minor when taken in context of a beautiful watch. When I look at my SARX035, I see none of those supposed negatives, just a gorgeous, classic, minimalist, well-balanced Grand Seiko design-language watch that looks pricier than the $768 I paid for it. I don't think the logo is too big, and I like the contrasting hands. I just love the beveled applied indices on that deep black dial, the Super Clear coating that blows away other glass and just makes the dial features pop, the sparkle and fire like a nice diamond. It's not a Grand Seiko but to me it's 85% of one, at 15% of the price. Whereas I wouldn't really put a SARB in the same ballpark.
@aryehh71285 жыл бұрын
Nice detail on the bracelet, which is probably a large part of what 'justifies" the price rise over the SARB033. (I really wish you compared those two more, as that's a decision conundrum, decided perhaps by case size.) Good eye to find the Pressmatic, too! Thanks.

The only real problem with this watch is pictures and video. This watch is a absolute must to be seen in person. Absolutely stunning AR coated sapphire, polished case and bracelet at grand Seiko quality without the price. Never before from any watch manufacturer has pictures so poorly represented the actual product. This watch is a absolute must buy if you have a larger wrist/looking for a black dial dress watch under 850. I keep reading about comparisons to Hamilton and Tissot. This watch cant be compared side by side with those dress watches, its not even close. A correct comparison when comparing case finishing/bracelet would be Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. Again, this is a must see in person.

Hey Patrick, thanks for the review. I do own the SARX035 myself. I agree with the slightly big size, fortunately my wrist can handle it ;-) On my watch I do not see the hands being a dual tone, but I maybe wrong. At least the blue handed white dial version SARX033 does not have it. I entirely do not share your comments on the bracelet. The curved outer sections of the endlinks nicely carry the theme to the adjacent links of the bracelet. The transitiion of those outer links to the lug has been solved cleverly by chamfering the lugs towards the links. This way there is no need to copy the curvature of the lugs, which by the way never is successfull, no ,matter how expensive a watch is. The design of the bracelet completely goes all the way up to the watch case, similar to the solution of the Rolex Date Just on the Jubilee, IMHO one of the best intergration of a bracelet. I am a little confused that you complain about the minor issue on the endlink integration of the SARX035 bracelet on one side and that you like the endlinks of the Razor-Wire bracelet where the watch integration went horribly wrong. However, thanks for all your work. Stefan
@otobotrecords6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The curves of the bracelet's endlinks do work exceptionally well with the lugs of the case. This is one of the few watches in the last couple of years Seiko got the design right (south of GS).

I'm a watchmaker who specialises in vintage Seikos. I bought myself a Seiko Presage cocktail. Worn it just once. Just so high. On paper it looked amazing but in reality it's like wearing a brick on your wrist. I don't get why people want big watches. To be flash I guess. We seem to have lost the subtle approach we used once for design. I wear a 34mm 1967 Seiko 7625-8031 every day. That's a 34mm watch. Perfect. Two things really get to me about Seiko watches. First is the Hardex crystal. Just fit sapphire Seiko! Hardex seems to scratch just as easily as plastic crystals. The second thing is something Seiko should have done something about years ago. Their bracelets are rubbish. Come on Seiko even the fakes use solid end links! I know guys why buy fakes for the bracelets as they are better made than the Seiko genuine items!

On me, a 37mm watch is simply too small. It's comfortable, but doesn't look right (depending on the case shape). It ruins a lot of the Seiko 5 range for me 😢 It's good they don't grant people this wish that every dressy watch should be 36-38mm. My 41mm sary057 is a perfect fit. I totally see your situation with this sarx though. I have the same freedom of wrist movement problem as you on my favourite (45mm) diver. It ruins the watch on a bracelet for me. I solve the problem by wearing it on a nato instead of the bracelet, but I'd rather have a 41-42.5mm version of the watch. Sadly, it's a unique piece and nothing like it in that size exists.

I’d argue that the Alpinist has “fancier” features, cathedral hands and a large, shiny bezel. What classifies a watch as any *one* thing? I’d say that Alpinist is a Casual-Dress watch and this is a Dress-Casual watch (70%-30%). Alpinist also ties into that Sports Watch category, but that compass is seeing little use here. I think the SARX has a good home with modern enthusiasts.

Big watches have the advantage of having more ‘presence’ than smaller diameter ones - especially when you have nice levels of polishing/finishing. Thorough review but imo there were way too many smudges and fingerprints in the closeup shots to be able to see the finishing properly.

I’ve seen some hands that are fully polished that reflects absolutely everything, like a mirror, making them almost black / invisible against the black dial. I think the idea of brushing one side of the hands is to negate this effect.

Great look at the SARX035. Agree, it would be better if they had made this watch smaller like your Presmatic.. which, btw, is quite a sweet find. But, I'm not a harcore dress watch purist so I think up to 41mm, maybe 42 depending on design, could be acceptable for a dress watch. Actually, I'm ok if anyone would like to sport a 50mm watch as a dress watch, there really should be no rules to what you can and cannot wear, but smaller will generally look more appropriate than larger for a dressed up look. I'm about to go off on a tangent.. more like a parallel, so it's still relevant to some of what you speak of. But, speaking of going back to old heritage designs and bringing them back into the modern day, but messing up the proportions. I can't stress this enough with Bulova. What do they call it? Their archive series? They have had at least a couple from this archive series which are great candidates to bring back. BUT! They screw themselves on the case size. Cases in point: The Bulova Lunar Pilot Watch. Why 45mm?! It should have been smaller. The Star & Stripes Chronograph.. Why 47mm?! The original was 43mm which would have been just fine for the cool retro aesthetics. Now, recently, the Bulova Devil Diver. Such a cool looking watch, very Doxa, but Bulova's own twist. Now, they are making a 40mm version, BUT, it is only for the limited edition orange dial. The non-limited edition with the black dial and red accents, which I would prefer more, is 44mm?! Why couldn't they have just made all of them 40mm?! Not only that, but if you look closely at the dial, they did not scale up the dial from the 40mm to the 44mm, so, there is actually a space around the dial which makes the dial look that much smaller & dispproportionate.. and, sadly, uglified an otherwise very cool looking watch. Anyways, great Seiko review, I don't think there are that many of this particular watch. I like the twisted lug look, but, I agree, it doesn't quite match the bracelet design or at least where it joins at the lugs. I pointed this out on another of your videos, but, that's why Zodiac messed up on their Super Seawolf 53. A very cool retro diver, but the jubilee bracelet used is quite curved and rounded, where as the case and lugs are very straight..looks weird and not right where they meet at the lugs.
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
The tangent on Bulova is so true... I'm really upset about the Oceanographer - or "Devil Diver" - reissues. I've been considering purchasing one for years, but they're so hard to secure with their original bracelet *and* in decent shape. I wouldn't mind taking in a new one though.
@khronokraze6 жыл бұрын
I know. They have a good idea to bring back the old stuff, but they botch each one up with a case size several mm too big. I mean the larger case sizes are wearable, but there's a BIG "IF ONLY" if I were to get one which would never be a satisfying feeling. They'd sell a lot better had they just kept original proportions. I was really looking forward to the Oceanographer/Devil Diver, too, but the main model that will be more in abudance and less expensive is the 44mm.. UGH! The orange 40mm is handsome still, but I feel that look almost exclusively belongs to Doxa.. thus, the black with the red crosshairs would have been sweet in 40mm. I could wear a 44mm, it's probably not all that different than a SRP Turtle on the wrist. But, I am making a more considered effort to keep my watch sizes to 42mm and under fo dive watches, the current exception being the Tuna style since it's round & lugless and wears quite good for its size. Ideally, 40mm and below for most everything else. If you've seen the other 2 models up for voting to be the next Archive series watch, those are pretty cool too. Maybe they may make them eventually and in a more classic size and not go 44mm and up. oh, well..

I have the SARX033 and the Bulova Lunar Pilot. You really cannot compare both watches in an argument about proportions. The Bulova is way out of proportions and I agree, it should have been smaller. I still wear the Bulova from time to time (7 inch wrists), because I think in the right situation it does work being a tool watch. The SARX033 on the other hand is absolutely fine size-wise. I'm glad Seiko went for the 41mm size. You also have to consider the relatively small lug to lug size. I think on a > 6.5+ inch wrist it does not wear big at all. If I want even a smaller more subtle look, I wear the SARB033 or the 017 Alpinist. Good to have options. But the SARX033/035 absolutely have their place IMHO.

Then ‘proper’ size of a dress watch is largely dependent upon the size of the persons wrist. Can you imagine a 35/36 on Shaq’s wrist? As long as it’s proportional, the design lends to the ‘dress watch’ aesthetic more than the size.

I wouldn't say they're the same, but quite similar... The 033 has more reasonable proportions (38mm > 41mm), same stainless steel case, but lacks level of case finishing and Dia-Shield coating that some love (or hate). Though SARX035 is twice the price of the SARB033... I'd likely get the SARB myself, yeah. Handset looks better as well.

Nice watch and review. I wouldn't call it a dress watch though. Maybe I'm old fashioned but a dress watch is thin, small, white dialed and on a leather or exotic skin strap.

Is it possible that watches might be getting larger because people are generally larger than they were 50-60+ years ago. Also, there does seem to be some promise when considering the smaller sizes being showcased at Bazel World. Just thinking out loud.

I like the SARX045 the mosr, gorgeous watch! Plays with light superbly, cheaper and a perfect size. And the newer 6r15d instead of the 6r15c as in the SARX035

Just a suggestion, but could you please wipe the watch down with a microfibre cloth and thoroughly wash your hands with soap before handling the watch in your videos? There are so many greasy fingerprints all over the watch, it's really distracting and actually makes it hard to see the finer details. I enjoy your videos though. Keep it up!

Wow your really picky Patrick, the hands and logo are just fine by me. As I have to say is the size 3mm (1.5 a side if you like), is not exactly a vast difference. I have the same size wrists as you and I find that size to be perfect. Reason I know this is I own a SARB035 and at 38mm when I received it I was in 2 minds to return it as I felt it was too small. I have got used to it now but prefer slightly larger, my fault for not tying on the SARB. I think size is a personal preference. It’s something I mentioned to a large jewellers in my home city of Leeds, whilst trying on an Omega the same watch came in 2 sizes and preferring the larger one I quipped most people will go for the smaller size I presume. Not in this store they said we sell way more watches over 40mm than under! Love the Presage line my fave is the SARX033, but a great review sir.

You could go with Seiya Japan, they should still have some inventory *or* eBay. Honestly, eBay for new products is usually a good deal, just make sure the seller has positive feedback.

I find the SARX035 bracelet unappealing as when sized, it doesn't sit neatly at the bottom of the wrist. The clasp seems to cause one link to stick out. I bought the watch, wore it once or twice, and decided to sell it on.
@harryhirsch70236 жыл бұрын
Hey Westley Greenhalf, sorry to read that you were not happy with the bracelet. Your description indicates that the watch indeed was not made for our wrist size. The watch hugs my wrist perfectly, no sticking out of links. Hope you did find a matsching watch though.

Yup, don’t I know it. I’m spending money on equipment. Set dressing is the last concern, but we’re getting there. I have a studio for my film work now, so piece by piece I’m acquiring things. However, I’d prefer not to settle on anything. Looking to make the transition from *no background* to *background* once.

Unfortunately, Seiko seems to be trending towards bigger watches on everything they make. Annoys the crap out of me since they make some very good looking watches. Perhaps Invicta is taking too much money from them and now they feel compelled to compete with their own bigger models. 40mm is my limit for dress watches, but 38 is just sweet.

While this is far above a sarb not even in the same ballpark. You can get an Orient star that comes in at 38 mm and is better in every catagory for half the price.
@jonathansaraco5 жыл бұрын
I think all the people here who are defending the size are missing the point. The problem is that nearly ALL of Seiko's dress watch offerings that aren't Seiko 5's are 40mm or above. That's insane. Seiko has all but abandoned the smaller wrist crowd nowadays and its especially egregious for this dress watch. No dress watch should come in a size larger than the Submariner, the quintessential DIVE WATCH. All these 41mm dress watch apologists will continue to defend Seiko even if they say that 43mm is the new acceptable size... then 45mm... endlessly. Seiko is making a huge mistake by abandoning the sub-40mm sizes. There's a reason the SARB033 was massively popular, and size had a bit to do with that. Dress watches around 41mm have a place don't get me wrong... but they should never be the norm. This watch represents that norm, and so do the SARYs, the cocktail times, etc.

Don't you think it would have been wiser to ask "John" what compelled him to buy the watch before you published your review especially since you borrowed it from him! Also did you bother find out from Seiko with all those Angela parts were more aesthetic or functional? I think there's a lot to be desired in your reviews I haven't got one of those watches and I haven't particularly got my eye on one but what you're saying doesn't seem to be well researched you just seem to be talking about a piece of jewellery or something to put on your arm

I can’t stand the subjective argument that a dress watch is supposed to be under 38mm. Not everyone is the same size, my wrists are about 8 inches. If you like smaller watches get the smaller one, in this case sarb if not get the sarx.

Honestly, yeah, I could. Sometimes they’re overlooked. 1/10 videos, a smudge’ll appear. Not wearing white gloves, haha. Just a consumer talking about watches, not trying to sell them, so the smudges you do see can be considered “daily wear.”

This review is ridiculous. Saying that it's too big at 41mm is like criticising a range rover for being too big. There is no such thing as a watch that is too big or too small, only watches that are too big or too small to YOU. I'm 6ft 5"...a 36mm watch looks like a womens watch on me. 41mm...42mm...43.5mm...all work perfectly on my 7.25 inch wrist. If you're 5ft 8 with a 6 inch wrist... Buy a 36mm, or a 38mm... Seiko have plenty to choose from. It would be like me criticising the sarb for being too small. It's not too small, it's just too small for ME. Idiotic.
