*NOTE* - So... The SARB017 was announced "discontinued" literally after my filming of this video. The subject matter of our Part Two video may vary, but the fact remains the same: these are (historically) seldom held onto. Let me know if you're now more inclined to purchase/hold onto the SARB017!

I thought this was so ugly when I first got into watches. It only took me 2 months into the hobby to get myself one and it's now a very special piece to me on a tan Hirsch Liberty strap. It's definitely the marmite of watches, but it's amazing how much it grows on you if you're on the loving side. My future kid will get mine

I *liked* the SARB017 as soon as I unboxed it. Changed the strap straight away to a simple Darlena brown leather strap. Wore it for a bit but for some reason it fell out of rotation. Then maybe6 months after I bought it picked it up again and then I truly fell in *love* with it. While It has that Explorer 1 feel (you can dress it up, dress it down) the green and brown strap always make me think of it as an autumn, winter, maybe early spring watch; a Sunday walk in the country watch; a watch you pair with a Barbour jacket. Which is lucky as I live in a rural location and ponce about in a Barbour.... So, overall: I love the watch but I can't see myself wearing it in the summer. But then that's what PADI Turtles are for.

I really wasn't aware so many people disliked the colour green until I heard about this watch. I actually love how unique it is and the whole style is right up my alley, slapped it on a strapcode oyster bracelet and it's just pure class, looks far more expensive than it is. I won't be getting rid any time soon.

I grabbed one for a big mark-up shortly after they announced the discontinuation, I never was super in love with the watch but it's so beautiful in person when the sun hits the dial. I can see handling this down to my son decades from now. It's so unique and unparalleled in my opinion.

I love my Alpinist , it's a great time piece from a company with a great heritage like Seiko, i used to think the green dial was hard to match with my daily wardrobe but now that i actually own it i think it goes good with almost any daily outfit ,other than the strap being too stiff i can't think of anything else i would change about it(looks great on a green or dark brown nato strap). I would recommend this watch to anyone who has the intention of buying it , you won't be disappointed.

As of April 2018, I've owned my Alpinist for about 6 months and here's my take on it. 1. As many people have mentioned, the green dial with gold numerals are polarizing. Yes, it took me a while to get used to it but I have to say it's grown on me. The watch actually look much better in person than it does on video. 2. Yes, the leather strap sucks--not supple as it needs to be. Once I wear the original strap out or many be in six months, I'll buy some premium straps. 3. The movement is consistent and accurate for a $500 mechanical movement (I paid mid-400 but now they are going to $500). I've measure the watch at least two to three times a week and it keep an averages of -12 seconds/day (+ - 2 to s/d). That's not bad at all! If I had one misgiving, when you manually winding the watch; the feedback isn't as refined as an entry level ETA movement. 4. I like the inner manual compass bazel but NOT the screw. As a someone who aspire to be a casual mountaineer (done Rainier, Shasta, and Whitney), I would never wear this to the mountains...just not that practical. Give me a cheap $50 quartz watch that I won't feel bad for scratching or losing it. 5. As for it's popularity, someone who sat next to me during a work-related training recognized what it was.... Do I think it deserves all the accolade it's received online among KZbinrs? Well, it's a great watch for $500 but I don't think it's gonna be an ultra rare collector piece given how popular it was before Seiko recently discontinued it. 6. This is a complaint about Seiko watches in general. Why are they so thick compared to other mechanical movement watches? While I wear my Alpinist as a dress watch--it works--it just doesn't slip under my shirt cuff naturally. I really watched to buy the Cocktail Time but ultimately decided against it for a number of reasons, but chief among them was the fact the thickness took away from the gorgeous dial...just doesn't look refined for a Friday night out.

I just received a Strapcode Jubilee bracelet for the Alpinist and I must say it is a huge improvement over the brown alligator leather strap. I high recommend the Strapcode for around $125.00. My Alpinist doesn’t lose or gain more than 5 seconds a week. Really good. The compass complication is useless to me (too small to see). It’s true that the green turns dark in low light but this just makes the change even better when you get out in the sun. IMO the MOTZ111J0 bracelet is the one to get (if you can get it). I may have a spare somewhere if you’re desperate.

*Thank you!* I have the bracelet... I hate to say it, but I'm not a huge fan... There will be a separate review on that. I'm using it, but that's only because I paid nearly $160 for it on Seiya. It has a lot of positives, but was it a "$160" bracelet? Definitely a discussion for later. It pairs very well with the watch though, without a doubt.

I purchased my Alpinist last year for only $350 and immediately put it on a Barton leather nato. Definitely a great value, even at $400+. In a dozen watch collection, ranging from $200 to $2000, this is one of my favorites. However, it gets some of my lowest wrist time due to the color. Beautiful, but doesn’t often match the look I’m after.

I was very fortunate enough to have purchased the SARB017 just before the announcement of it being discontinued. I paid just under $400 shipped directly from Japan. I unfortunately have not been able to purchase the STRAPCODE Jubilee Bracelet that matches it because the one thing I hate about the SARB017 is its ugly stock Leather band. I really do not like the stock band. Aside from the leather band, the Watch itself is a sheer delight. Most, cannot appreciate the Alpinist until they have it in their own hands. I know there are a lot of ppl that dislike the green dial and that's ok. I personally don't get the appeal of the pepsi or coke faced divers on the market but to each is own. Just because I don't particular care for them doesn't mean others can't enjoy them or find them to be their favorites. There are many black faced watches on the market that require a closer look to distinguish itself from others within its own brand. The Alpinist is ICONIC with its Green Dial, and is unmistakably recognizable to a watch enthusiast whether they like the style or not. It is a keeper for me.

Had mine a couple of years, really like it and won’t be selling anytime soon no matter how the values have increased since the discontinued announcement. The box is rubbish though and the strap is horrible, especially compared to the similar looking strap on my Tissot Visodate. I’ve encountered a lot of people on KZbin that hate it due to it being green, which is ridiculous. It’s easy to make a good looking black, white or blue watch but it’s hard to make green look good and this watch pulls it off. A great watch for the money.

Hi Patrick. Thank you for a great video. I have had mine for about 2 months now and I love it. I will never ever sell it. 😊 A couple of things that I have noticed, and was wondering if you have any comments on. The movement is loud, in relation to the winder, it is really "noisy" and sort of "rattling", like you can hear some of the gears turning/clicking. The date change starts allready at 10.30, and actually changes 11.50. This I find odd. Not a mayor complaint but still. I dont know if these things are common to this movement. The rotating inner bezel is a little bit wobly, in the sense that it moves a little bit in and out, horizontally in relation to the dial, when you turn it back and forth. Some thoughts from me on this watch. Keep up the good work.! 👍 All the best Søren

1. The "rattle"... *Duly noted* and personally observed, it will be discussed. 2. My date change is the same! It's certainly an oddity, but just how these 6r's fire up. 3. Also, *Duly Noted* *Thank you!* Your feedback/observations have been much the same as mine.

The Alpinist is now my daily wear in a nice collection of Swiss watches and even a Grand Seiko. I love my alpinist and don't plan to ever sell it. I was mesmerized by the sunburst green dial with gold applied indices, hour markers and logos. The compass, although a redundant complication in my view was still nicely designed and added a layer of complexity to an otherwise too dressy style dial. However, after owning the watch I noticed some slight let downs that prevented me from giving this watch more wrist time. 1. The dial is a great day time outdoor watch which show case its green sunburst dials and gold tone hands and markers perfectly. BUT. It is an equally horrible dial at night or poorer lighting conditions. The green and gold colors seems black and dark and lost its sunburst effect and the whole thing just doesn't pop. 2. That feeling u get when the Crown "click into place" at different positions when you pull it outward or press it inward is not very clear at times. 3rd to 1st or 2nd position is the worst out of all. Many times I can't differentiate between clicks. Even though I never handled any other alpinist other than mine. I believe this can be a QC or tolerance issue... this is a sub $700 Seiko after all. 3. The rotating chapter ring action when you turn the 4 o'clock crown does feel a little "lightweight" and cheap. 4. Another QC or probably construction and design issue I noticed about my alpinist compass chapter ring is that even though when I align North to 12, E S W will align perfectly to 3 6 9. Somehow, when I align South to 12, W N E are always a little off from 3 6 9. This is a very frustrating for me even though strangely, my turtle with a slightly misaligned chapter ring doesn't. And most of us live in the north hemisphere. If they are going to misaligned the compass, they should do it in a way that it seems ok when South is at 12.... 5. There is a flat step like bezel/frame that is slightly lower than the flat crystal around its outer edge. This edge surface around the crystal is a major fingerprint magnet and difficult to swipe for as it is a very small area around the crystal at a different elevation. 6. Lastly. My alpinist despite within +20s on most days is the least accurate of all my other Sub $500 Seiko which consist of mostly 4R36 divers. Just my luck. What is the point of having a 6R15 in the alpinist if Seiko won't even at least slightly put some effort into regulating it? Sorry for the rant. It is not my intention. I am just responding to your call on more critically examining this beautiful piece that I love very much. You are right about the overly one sided praises of it online and I hope more critical discussions on this lovely piece will lead to a better version of the alpinist in the future.

Try it out on an Erika's Originals MN strap! I'm rocking mine on a subdued Mirage (grey) strap so the watch head really pops. I feel like the SARB017 won't suit straps that are shouty as the dial is rather busy aesthetically (but executed well). Thanks to you for pointing my way to Erika's straps I have solved my issues with typical nato straps. Looking forward to your review on the Alpinist and take care :)
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
Heyyy, you're welcome brother! I love my MN Straps, but I don't have any for *20mm lugs* -_- I suppose I could try squeezing a 22mm (21mm) onto the case, but my next choice'll be a Shiznit strap I have waiting for it.
@nathanwood15066 жыл бұрын
Aw man.. Shiznits are cool! Curious to see what colours you match it up ;) A useful tip I haven't seen mentioned often which increases the functionality of the inner compass ring... You could use it as a countdown timer. For example setting 'West' marker to align with the minute hand gives you a 15 minute countdown until the minute hand hits 'North'. Say if you wanted a 20min countdown then use the marker at 240deg, so gotta use your imagination for more specific timing. I wouldn't depend on it in dire situations being that it freely rotates but I have yet to burn my dinner in the oven!

i would love to buy the Seiko Alpinist but for some reason i just can't connect with this watch ''yet'' not that i don't like it, but more because the dial doesn't work for me. First of all the green dial it's totally a turn off, i would ve like it in marin blue or black or even in creamy white dial... also the compass ring it's just a useless feature. but on the other hand i love the finitions of the case, the cathedral hand looks so dramatic, the crown is just fantastic on this watch and the fact that is a signed crown is definitely a plus. i ll see on your part 2 video how the crown action performs on this one...so you see Patrick i am in trouble here, i love this watch and at the same ''time'' i hate it... it is not how we are supposed to feel when we love something or someone? looking foward for the next video maybe you gonna be able to change my mind on that one. take time and take care Pat.
@tiredoffools89296 жыл бұрын
Mehdi Rmiki if you do not like the green dial I would recommend passing on the Alpinist altogether. That green/Gold dial is what makes this watch ICONIC and UNIQUE. You should absolutely enjoy what you buy and if you are turned off by the color, why buy it at all? There are plenty of black dialed watches on the marker. Granted, none with all the features at the price point of the Alpinist, but why buy a watch you don't like the way it looks? I love my Alpinist, but if it were Pink, perhaps I'd feel as you do now being that it is green? Save your money and buy a watch you actually can enjoy in a color you like.
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
*Thank you* Mehdi. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with this piece... Very excited to share my observations with you all. It's not as polarizing a color scheme as you'd think, the Green & Gold dial. It's actually quite versatile. So much to discuss, be well and thank you for watching.

Mighty fine enabling. As always 😉. Popular watch yet keeps getting flipped: relentless Seiko hype online. It's affordable and scratches an itch but it's pretty polarising so hence the flipping, which also sets off the regular hype and buying. The Seiko ouroboros. Same with the turtle.

I don't know if "everyone" loves the SARB017.. but, it sure seems pretty darn close to it. Myself.. I like the design and recognize the dial and details are lovely.. and the history and quality and idea behind it are all very cool. BUT, I am not a fan of green dials.. although I've owned a few in the past and currently have a SARB059 Alpinist, but that dial is very dark green and reads as black 90% of the time, which is what I prefer and just having that slight hit of green under the right lighting and angle as a visual surprise color rather than have it dominate.. but, getting back on point.. I'm not generally a fan of gold on my watches, period.. however, i do prefer rose gold if I were to go with any gold accent. Which brings me to next related point, the gold accents on green.. Again, it's not a bad color combo, but not my cup of tea and I think you may find several people find the gold and green a hard color combo to compliment straps and attire around.. There are a decent number of combinations, but like with any watch with a strong color accent, you're constrained to the watch's color palette.. well, that's if you really care to coordinate your whole ensemble. Yes, on one hand it is versatile to go from tool, to casual to dress. On the other hand, its own color palette limits the versatility in color. Curious while sporting on the wrist do (or will) you find the compass crown easy enough to shift the internal compass out of alignment? I know the slightly larger SARG005 & SARG007 have that issue, at least I have had that. I mean it in use and in practice, is the compass ever truly aligned with anything? The sun moves throughout the day and so do you so you basically will need to recheck and re-orientate yourself throughout the day to make sure you are bearing correct direction. However, having OCD, I can't tolerate having details and settings and information randomly moving around without my explicit actions. And, wanting to have the best practical application of an instrument on a watch, such as a compass bezel, that compass really should not be moving freely without you purposefully turning the crown to do so. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that needs to be answered about the SARB017 as there have been MANY reviews about it already. I'm sure either the Seiko oyster bracelet for the SARB017 or one from StrapCode will work equally as well. I'd probably opt for strap code since the cost of the Seiko one is rather ridiculous and I suppose one would only really want it to have OEM parts and the Seiko branding on it. If you're into gold and the 2-tone trend happening these days, the strap code 2-tone jubilee is probably a pretty perfect option to pair with the SARB017. And, regarding the 6R15 movement. I know it is generally regarded as better than the 4R and 7s26. But, honestly, I've owned all and I have to say I can't understand why? Maybe the power reserve is better, close to 50 hours? But, performance-wise for consistent accuracy, they all can equally be the same. Either straight out the box or if I regulate it myself, there seems to be no significant advantage to the 6R15 over a 4R, NH, and 7s26 movements other than a higher power reserve and hacking/hand winding where applicable.
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
The components that go into the 6R series are apparently of a higher quality (can neither confirm/deny, but that’s one understanding), accuracy always varies and the power reserve has been more around 52 hours for me, 50+ across all models. The OEM bracelet was rather expensive, at $160... I’ll reserve my opinions for another video. On your compass note, *duly noted.* It’s definitely a topic I’ll be speaking on. Be well Wing and thank you for the observations/inquiries as always!
@khronokraze6 жыл бұрын
Well, I suppose that's entirely possible, But, just looking at the movements from through an exhibition case back, you really couldn't even tell the difference, I think, except for the movement model # usually engraved on the rotor... then there is the matter of the performance accuracy across all related models.. pretty darn close enough.. minus the 50+ hour of power reserve in the 6R which is nice. I'm not snubbing a 6R movement, I'll gladly take it if it happens to be in a watch I purchase, but overall, I can't say there's a huge difference in overal performance you get between a 7S26, NH or 4R in comparison. The higher power reserve is nice, but if it's going to be your main daily wearer, then the power reserve, no matter the max capacity, isn't likely a huge benefit. Also, for most of us watch enthusiasts who have multiple watches anyways, most watches revisited after a wearing cycle will likely have been off the wrist and completely powered down already. Now, I see the benefit of say putting down a 50+ hour power reserve watch at the end of a work week for the weekend and having it still running by the start of the next week so that it is ready to go. But, I think there is, alternatively, something to be gained by not having your watches constantly powered and constantly running in terms of wear and tear and being able to have greater space between service intervals. Anyways, I look forward to your review on the watch and the pricey bracelet.

Hi Patrick, A year & a half ago I was looking really hard at this, I went to SeiyaJapan on line to buy it and as I was scrolling down the page I saw the SARW019! Got that instead because of the 28,800 beat rate, 6r21 movement! Now I am hoping Seiko comes out with a new Alpinist in blue, I'll be all over that one! Good preview! Thanks!
@DerpEye6 жыл бұрын
I guess they won't release anything similar anytime soon now. Go look up the Oris Big Crown which looks like a copy of the Alpinist, with different dial options.

similar taste. i had an alpinist Jan 2018 and SARW019 this April.

Hey Patrick, I got the alpinist about a month ago I love it but I have one question what do you think about the 200 m water resistance with the secondary inter rotating bezel crown it’s not a screw down crown like the main crown and it scares me that that is a weak spot for water to get in so I’m hesitant to swim with it.. I’m sure it is water resistant, seiko doesn’t tend to lie about their water resistance. It still leaves me wondering how they achieve that kind of resistance with a non-screw down crown when the main crown is? what are your thoughts?
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
You've really got me thinking on this now as well... Most of the secondary crowns I've seen on divers have been secured. Now, Seiko's earliest divers never featured screw down crowns. In theory, the gasket between the crown and case should be enough to achieve it's water resistance. *However,* I do understand the unshakeable concern you have... *Duly noted,* definitely to be discussed on the show.

Take Time, w/Patrick Marlett thanks for the reply! can’t wait for that episode 🤙🏻
@achiltsompanos4476 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t worry to much. I was diving 30-50m with a Casio diver without a screw down crown. If you check and change gaskets every few years you should be ok. Divers have a screw down crown so that If you bump the watch against say a rock, the crown will not pop out and ruin your watch. The compass crown doesn’t pop like the crown.

How does the compass function work? Meaning, is it used more of an orientation of where east and west is or would it be used as a reminder of what azimuth you want to go on? Thanks! and its great to see a Seiko that's not a pure diver

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the alpinist. It is a great, great watch but what I find that I don't wear it very often just because the beautiful green dial is hard to match with other clothes. This watch is a fantastic value for the money. I don't wear mine very often but I won't be selling mine any time soon. However, that is why I think most people end up selling this watch.
@triples4good6 жыл бұрын
I really like my Aplinist. Although, having said that, I'm not super impressed with the accuracy of the 6R15 movement. Mine has been somewhat erratic mostly running slow out of spec. Honestly, my SKX009 is more accurate. I still like it but have thought about selling it to help finance another purchase. Great video as always.

Interesting, I hear a lot of issues with the 6R15... I've never faced any, but I'm sorry that's been a problem. *Duly noted*

Hey Pat, do you ever find it difficult for a watchmaker to source parts on some of the vintage Seikos that ypu buy?
@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
I actually source the parts. Verifying authenticity is often difficult, so I buy broken or “for parts” amongst listings I see with accurate components. Normally though, during a service, my repairman hasn’t had trouble (regarding movement components).

I use a gentleman in Manhattan, but I wouldn't quite recommend his service (I love him, but too much to blurt out in the comments section)... Seiko Service Center (Mahwah) NJ is a joke. I wish I had a good recommendation. Once I find a service center I could recommend, I'll make a video on it.

On paper, It’s an excellent watch. I just don’t like the way it looks. I hope the next alpinist has more contemporary hands/indices, a black dial, less text and a more utilitarian strap.

Though the sarb017 looks good with a leather/nato or even a rubber strap, it's not a "complete watch" without the oem bracelet.
@tiredoffools89296 жыл бұрын
hippoo25.... I agree with your concept of "complete watch," but I can't stand the oem bracelet and I would much prefer the STRAPCODE Jubilee bracelet as demonstrated here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6Wze36Bl7eop7c

@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
Shoot, I’m sorry man... Honestly, the alternatives are going to be in the same range or more expensive... Check out the Christopher Ward C65 Trident Vintage, (used) Oris 65’s... Apart from some micro-brands, and the options I listed shift between $450-900 in various conditions, the Alpinist may still be a good purchase at the right price. I wouldn’t spend more then $500 on it, I can say that. They were only around $350 because the market was so saturated, at $400-450 it’s still good.

Guess I'm in the minority - I'd much prefer this watch in cream or black. Green or blue just isn't my thing! Cheers 👍👍
@tiredoffools89296 жыл бұрын
inkitatus1.. no I think you are in the majority, but the green dial is largely what sets this apart from all of the other watches and not only make it UNIQUE, but also ICONIC. I generally prefer Black dials on my watches as well, but there are millions of Black dial watches on the market that we could purchase, but they won't have the sheer value for the money in terms of quality or Iconic recognition as the Alpinist has.

kongmw I think you are in the majority not the minority. The SARB033 is a fine watch in its own right. I do personally love the SARB017 because it is a quality timepiece, unmistakably recognizable, and ICONIC.

So great review! But I have a problem with this watch which saddens me. When turning the crown on the compass bezel, I notice that the inner bezel has a slight bit of play in it. It shifts a bit up and down when I turn the crown. Also the second crown wobbles as shown in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5Cnmnd_mKl3nrs. Does anyone else have this problem? can someone tell me what I should do with it? or is it normal?

@tiredoffools89296 жыл бұрын
Its all about the QUALITY and price point. This watch for the longest time was in the $350 price point and it had a collection of quality components generally only found on watches over the $1K price point. Even now its $500+ aftermarket pricing it is still a great deal considering. Love it or hate it... it is undoubtably ICONIC. Green dials are not for everyone. Blue Ferraris, Champagne and Caviar are also not for everyone. To each is own.

@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett6 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, "meh" is a good summation for most folks. The OEM bracelet really helps this watch out a lot. I've at least three-to-four different strap combinations that I've rotated this on. It's incredibly versatile for having a Green & Gold dial. It's certainly not perfect though.
@dpw19896 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. Sarb017 vids have been around awhile. I bought this one also and returned it. Garbage strap, and the dial face is funky with while compass and gold indices. I'd love a green dial in that case without the other BS compass crap. IMHO ;)

Mmmm! Sorry. This watch has no idea what it wants to be? It's a smorgasbord of mixed and conflicting design IMHO. It is neither one thing or the other and does none particularly well. I respect the build quality as I do with most Seiko's and I am aware of the price. bargain I have handled this watch and I m frankly perplexed by its popularity. Good on Seiko for hitting another home run but for my two cents it looks like it was designed by Willy Wonka :)
