I remember wearing my 6309-7040 (Turtle) in the 1980s during the height of the Quartz Crisis/Craze, thinking that this is just the best watch design ever. Perfect legibility, perfect comfort, perfect complications, perfect toughness, and perfect durability. (Pause to check wrist) Yep, it still is.

Aside from fountain pens, I also love mechanical watches. I love the Seiko watches. These Turtles are very nice.

to everyone viewing: note that they both aren't the SRPE93K1 (which I was looking for), which has a small lumed index at the three o'clock position, right next to the date field

Correct, it is the SRP777

both of these are great. the black dial black bezel new models are excellent all rounders, but the vintage models do have something a little special that puts them ahead. i currently have 4 6309s and 3 6306s 🤓

Crown position of the srp777 is slightly different to the 6309 as it falls at approx 18 minute mark not the 20 past mark.

Yes -Plus the chapter ring is less prominent or steeped on the 6309 /6306.

The 777 is a rare example of a retro watch done right. However, to me, the extra mm in both thickness and length make it wear completely differently - the 6309 just sneaks in on the acceptable side of large and flat. The 77* family also appears to have a cast, shiny bezel with a very light spring versus a milled bezel with a satisfying click ball on the 6309. The 77* family also suffers from modern Seiko's QC problems. Q: How do you spot a fake Seiko? A: The bezel, dial and rehaut all line up. But. Good luck buying a decent, unmolested 6309. Minefield!
