I for one am shocked that "ya like jazz" predates Bee Movie. This is a piece of meme history.

This commercial is still in my head basically every time I pump gas, and even with a debit card I still try not to over squeeze.

Same with me and my college buddies at the time. Also "release the hounds!" in "Jerry's" voice instead of Mr. Burns'.

One of my all time favorite commercials. Crazy to see a “full” tank for $20. Just put in $100.02. (Yep, missed the “perfect pump” by 2 cents. Classic over squeeze!)

At least a dozen times a year I say “Release the hounds!” before commencing a task while people are paying attention and nobody gets the reference. I mean honestly who doesn’t casually remember the lines from a 60sec credit card commercial from 28yrs ago starring the biggest sitcom star of 1994?!? I can’t be the only one.

This was a big deal because everyday bank debit cards didn’t really exist to the general masses and credit cards were for the wealthy or smart money people. Pay at the pump was a new concept (created in 1978) in the US as only 13% of stores had the technology in 1994. It really didn’t take off until after the turn of the century.

A more surprising history, the first debit card actually came out as far back as 1966 by the Bank of Delaware. In the 90s or much earlier I think, debit cards were once called check cards. However, due to the popularity of credit cards at the time, very few people knew about the debit cards and a minority of people use them. Not only that, I think card terminals at the time can only read credit cards, not debit and prepaid cards.

I still attempt to hit a perfect pump almost every time i get gas. Today I hit the fabled double perfect pump: $14.00 for exactly 4.000 gallons. I celebrated like I just won the Super Bowl.

To this day, when I am at a gas pump, and it doesn't hit an even amount; no matter what the actual number is, I catch myself hearing a supercilious "$20.37" in my head :D

What does this have to do with AMEX? Because you can do exact change with the card rather than cash? I was like 11 in 1998 but I forgot about this stuff...
@DK-sz8lz4 жыл бұрын
Sure you can do this with any other card, but AMEX are the ones who had Jerry on payroll. This was during the hey days of Seinfeld.
@OnsenDreamscapes4 жыл бұрын
@@DK-sz8lz I see but I guess I meant credit cards in general, couldn't you also get change back in cash? What is the advantage of a card in general in this scenario?
@MarshallIgnas3 жыл бұрын
@@OnsenDreamscapes 1998 was a very different time. We carried and paid with cash, predominantly, which meant that it could take longer to get change back if you had to break a bill. It really wasn't until the mid 00's that we really switched over to using plastic for everything. That said, even now, I would advise anybody to carry anywhere between $60-$150 in cash because you never know when you're going to need to use that paper.
@OnsenDreamscapes3 жыл бұрын
@@MarshallIgnas what i'm confused about is that the gas station owner seems to not give back change to the other customer paying cash and instead just rounds it up to the nearest dollar or whatever... that doesn't seem right. the gas station owner should have and give the change.

Where I work they have charger stations that don't cost anything...I haven't paid for a charge for my Tesla in a year...We have a Ford for longer trips but we haven't used that either in a long time. I worry about the gas getting old in it so the only time we take it out is to just run it so it won't go bad from disuse. I don't expect the free charging to stay a perk for long but it is incredible while it lasts.
