Because they know where the numbers should go. Imagine you get 100 cards with numbers and 100 boxes and every box has a different number on it. In order to put the card in the correct box, you still need to look at the boxes. The difference is that these algorithms do not compare "greater or less", but they still need to compare in the style "equal or not equal". Which is way easier.
@true_perplexeus5 жыл бұрын

Absolutely amazing. I had to do sorting for one of my finals in college. Many of these go WAY past my comprehension. I would LOVE to see the coding behind "Patience". Very pleasing to the eye.

Soooo, radix just warps space and time until the list is sorted? And flash sort opens a portal to another dimension where the list is already sorted?
@skunkfac35 жыл бұрын
Radix sort is all about sorting the numbers by their individual digits. Lowest Significant Digit radix sort first sorts the numbers by the number in their ones column, then does it again by their tens column, and so on. Most significant digit starts from the other end, so hundreds, tens, then ones.
@argh5235 жыл бұрын
Flash sort assumes a uniform distribution. Like all the numbers from 1-2000, and when it finds element 1000, it just blindly puts it at position 1000, "guessing" it should be somewhere near that spot. So for this specific kind of data, it just puts everything in the right spot on the first try.
@edgeisloveedgeislife54395 жыл бұрын
argh523 but if a number was missing in the data set it wouldn't be able to fully sort it?
@MistahGamah5 жыл бұрын
@@edgeisloveedgeislife5439 More or less, in practice algorithms like flashsort are always accompanied by a cheap and reliable way to "finish" sorting---usually insertion sort. But in practice, the vast majority of versatile, reliable, fast, and memory-efficient sorting algorithms are going to be quicksort-based (e.g. introsort) or mergesort-based (e.g. timsort). Other useful sorts include heapsort (the other part of introsort) and the aforementioned insertion sort (theoretically much worse than quick/merge/heap but very fast for small data sets or when the set is already almost sorted, like in flashsort).

Thank you for warning about seizure. I have minor epilepsy, that is completly under control, but 1 sec of it put me in very uncomfortable state, I turned video off immediately. I had eye twitching, blackness of sight, anxiety and my brain just hurt and, let say, jumped back (people with epilopsy know what I'm talking about). It lasted 30 seconds. It is extremly strong trigger, much stronger than light used during EEG diagnose and that light is programmed to activate different part of brain, especially in epileptics brains. I have not suspected that it would be so harsh. Would you mind if I show this film to few people that are making neurological research? At some point it may be useful for them. I turned on film on purpose, I acknowlaged your warning, it was experiment that I did to myself. I am an adult, used to be neuroscince researcher, I was aware what could happen only seeing thumbnail. Nothing bad happened, you are good :)

I would absolutely watch a video of someone breaking down what all these mean and how they work. Are there certain use-cases for slower sorting methods or are you always looking for the quickest method?
@LidellFrasier5 жыл бұрын
Based on my rudimentary understanding, there are cases in which slower methods are preferable. For the most part, I believe there are a couple of preferred or standardized methods, but some cases may be better sorted to a slower sort that could potentially use less of the available system resources. But I'm not much for deep-level stuff like this, so please get more opinions and info from other sources.
