Its always lovely hearing their background too as i see several epilepsy doctors, nurses, neurologist and neuropsaichatrist too who are amazing. Ive had epilepsy since I was 7. They have been really helpful.

Its interesting when she said seizures can be caused by "lack of fuel/food" which explains why i had more seizures when i struggled with my eating disorder.

Such an important topic, Carla! Raising awareness about GLUT1 Deficiency Disorder can make a real difference-thanks for shedding light on this crucial issue.

This has given me food for thought - pardon the pun 😅 Doesn’t the Keto diet intend to reduce carbs / sugars in the brain as they develop the excitatory aspects of glutamate and can provoke seizures? If so, does this mean that seizures can be caused by two extreme opposites of the sugar spectrum, so the wrong analysis / diagnosis could be detrimental to the condition?

“Food for thought”. 😅 Honestly, I’m not an expert on the Keto diet - even though I’ve been on a form of it for about 3 weeks now! There are some useful names I can drop here though, if you like…!

Hi Torie Yes, it would be useful if you drop those names into this one. The video turned my understanding of epilepsy around, as I’ve always been informed that reduction in sugars is beneficial (Keto). Perhaps it’s not a “one size fits all” subject?

Check out research by Carla (of course - links are in the text below the recording) and that of her colleagues Rikke S. Møller and Ingrid Scheffer. Also check out Matthews Friends (www.matthewsfriends.org) who specialise in keto diets for children with refractory epilepsy who could benefit from the keto diet. There's also @metabolicmind and @ProLongevity to check out here on KZbin. :)
