This is terrific! I love this long-form content with detailed information. Please share more long-form content like this. Chris is terrific photographer and teacher; his choice of recreating Karsh with flash strobes is terrific. Well done--I feel like I learned a few things here. It was cool to see Chris setting up a photo with just a light meter and no test shots.

Its a great instrucional video, I'm not sure what the "too much talking" comment is about, the talking/explanation is more important to understanding than simply firing off shots. Explaining the what/why/how is far more useful imho, and Chris explains it really well. Thanks! I already have (and use) a 308X, but do want to upgrade to the L858 at some point :)

48:36 Correct me if I'm being wrong, but putting a sock on a modifier does not make the light from it softer, it makes it diffused (instead of being direct without the sock). With all due respect to Chris!
@SekonicGlobal
@SekonicGlobal 7 ай бұрын
Correct, the sock diffuses the light. Therefore it will take on more qualities of softer light, but depending on the relative distance and relative size compared to the subject will dictate how much of a softening effect it has.

hi! great video! as profoto user, to use L-858D we have to trigger like him with a second remote (like him, the one in his left hand)?
@SekonicGlobal
@SekonicGlobal 7 ай бұрын
Yes, correct. There currently isn't an internal module to remotely fire the lights. You have to use cordless flash mode.

i think over- and underexposure needs to be defined more precisely when using incident measuring. If you measure the light by holding the dome next to the face pointing at the light source and it reads at key, meaning: the light source gives meters at the f-stop number you use on the lens.... well then: the bright side of the face will be probably one to two stops over key on the picture. so here is my confusion: if you underexpose the face... what do you mean? underexposing it in terms of incident reading? let´s say you turn down the light, so that your incident meter reads one or two stops under key (lens aperture). that would make the bright side of the face likely fall straight onto key if you read it with a reflective meter. is that underexposed? or exposed at key? was it overexposed when the meter read at key? if you underexpose with your incident meter it does not necessarily have to show as underexposed on your film..... the exact measuring would be with a reflective metering, which is actually what is represented with false color....

Hi Chris, I do understand its a sponsored video but... in the era of a digital photography and tethering the best light meter are your eyes , something does or does not look like it should , no meter will ever tell me or measure how the photograph feels or how I like to stylize it with light. Just a well calibrated monitor is enough. Those who work with film , yes I see the use of it but otherwise is a relict that cannot dictate or limit creative decisions.
@SekonicGlobal
@SekonicGlobal 2 ай бұрын
Not answering for Chris. But we don't feel he say's a meter is the only way to arrive at a final exposure but shows how it is simply part of his process. It's merely another way to do it, and we will not always have the option to shoot tethered, and it helps us remember what the lights were balanced at and start out in a better place.
@samthecat2700
@samthecat2700 3 күн бұрын
IMHO, the key lights are too high resulting in the eyes being too dark. Also, Karsh used a semi-telephoto lens to reduce distortion.

Not necessarily mean spirited… I do corporate training and according to the Princeton CTT certification, 3 to 5 minutes and you will lose all but the most vested audience that has an immediate need for the content (as I do) and it’s best to mix things up every 3 to 5 minutes… Still feel for the poor guy forced to sit there like a mannequin thru the narrative… 😏

We work with some of the best commercial portrait photographers in the world, and they often choose the aperture based on the look they are going for, what they want in focus, and the lighting. One aperture definitely doesn't fit every shoot. - Ab Sesay
