Thanks for your video. I have a Beneteau in-mast furling and I can reef it while sailing close hauled (maybe 30 degrees) when the wind is coming from starboard. The genoa pushes the boat while I move the boom enough to leeward so that the main flogs and loses tension enough to be furled in.Not advisable and I would say almost impossible when the wind is coming from port. The sail gets pushed against the mast opening's edge and it won't move, plus the chaffing against the mast's edge would soon destroy the sail. I have had jamming issues only when furling out, it never jammed when furling in. I think these issues were caused by poor boom to sail angle while furling in. Always let the main sheet go so that the boom can raise while furling in and also keep some tension on the outhaul by holding it in your hand and letting go in a controlled manner.

That must be a small thin mainsail? how do you squeeze it into that thin mast?
@SVParadigme20 Жыл бұрын
It is a Elvstrom Offshore grade main. The thickest sail clothe I have seen on a 40 foot boat. That main has at least 30000nm offshore since I bought it in 2013. The sail and the in-mast furler function just perfectly well 10 years in. I do bring the sail to a loft every other season for minor maintenance items to keep it tear free.

Great video. Did you have troubles for keeping the sail "reefed" on heavy wind? I´m having this issue and I think I understand the ratchet/free functionality

Nope I just pull hard on both end of the furling line and the stays where it needs to stay
@marcderveeuw4 ай бұрын
Yes. For mainsail reefing, or flattening the mainsail, change the pin from free to ratchet.Lube the system every season. If not, you need to handle 3 lines, the loop and the outhaul.

Hi Nick, thanks for great video. I have the same rig on my Hunter 44DS. Could you walk me through your procedure of furling the main in down-wind conditions with winds over 25 kts? On my boat I have no backstay and back-swepped spreaders so the main gets stuck against the spreaders quickly. Your thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the video and i gree with you. It is a great system. Recently i'm experiencing a small problem. When i want to get the mainsail out with the white line, it doesn't go smooth. (neverending is free) but when i give a bit of slack on the neverending is runs out very easily. Any suggestions? Regards and fair winds. Kees

Thanks for the question! It sounds like at the first pull you have to help your system by reducing the friction in your clutches. It is hard to diagnose these things without seeing the boat « in person » where do you sail these days?

@@SVParadigme20 Hi and thanks for the answer. I sail in the Netherlands ;-). I 've noticed the neverending line is somewhat slipping through the furling system. I'm planning to change the line. I let you know if that is the solution.

What would you say is the best point of sale to reef or furl it?
@SVParadigme202 жыл бұрын
ANY point of sail is good. There is no weakness or flaws to that rig. It is a mechanical thing so of course it has to be in good condition to function as expected. I can say my boat has 50 000nm on it mostly offshore sailing and the Selden has NEVER failed me caused ANY problem. I grease the cogs once in a while. Last season I have changed my Standing rig. That's is for maintenance since 2013. There is all kinds of people saying these rigs have problems or you can only furl them at a precise wind angle. In my experience this has proven incorrect. I have furled it going up wind or broad reaching in 46 knots apparent the system has ALWAYS functioned perfectly for me. I really that people that have problems with their rigs simply do not know how to operate them. It is really simple. Can't say enough good things about this rig

I will soon post an update about my standing rig change. I hope to publish a handling technique video soon also so stay tuned

@@SVParadigme20 Great. Thanks for sharing! I have read everything from 0, 10-20 and 60 degrees on a starboard tack as the best angle to furl. 0-10 results in a lot of flogging for me in stronger winds. Also it would be great to get your advice how to best furl it single handed.

Thank you for your video, actually I checked it because I had a huge problem with it on a Bavaria 37. In strong winds, not only the neverending slipped, it also came out of the winch fixed on the mast. Neverending and outhaul were carefully handled by the crew so no issue there, they had trained the maneuver dozens of times in the week preceding. By the time the crew reported they were unable to reduce the mainsail , already the leach was ripped off. By the time I reached the mast to take the sail in from operating the winch on the mast, the sail had ripped horizontally. The force of the wind was about 30-35knts, certainly not stronger than 40knts. From my experience this in-mast furling system is not suitable for CAT A (open ocean) sailing at all.

This happens: the reefing line is never ending. At the spot where it is put together the rope is slightly thinner. That’s the part that can come out of the winch at the mast. It happens very rarely, but is possible. Excuse me for my English.
