For maximum control, would it help to cover the back side of the paper also? Would the bleach soak up through the bottom of the paper?

Great video! Mr. Rudman is a master of toning and B&W, in general. I have a signed copy of his "The Master Photographer's Toning Book" that has been a great resource to me over the years.

I always had it that if toning to completion then refixing was unnecessary as everything was converted. If partially redeveloped/toned then yes but for complete toning as here then not needed. But i sometimes throw mine in weak and long hypo bath anyways if i have time and space in the session. Or if i remember.
@PictorialPlanet Жыл бұрын
You are right, that toning to completion should elevate the need for a fix but just to be sure I figure I should make sure any remaining bleached silver is disposed of :) Thanks for your comment, Simon! Very useful for others to know.

Brilliant video John, one thing I do is use a spare print, I cut into strips of say ten strips. I mark the strips with a marker 1-10. The numbers will correspond to minutes of time. I then bleach them and pull each one out of the bleach at the marked time. I then sepia tone them to the ratio for the colour I want at a set time normally 6 minutes. What this does is tones to the amount of time it’s been bleached giving a range tones from soft to more intense. With these strips you have effectively created colour test charts that gives you more control on reprints and other prints. You can also do it for the various ratios of toners so you will have an idea what times to go to when bleaching for toning.

@@bennicholsphotography The difficulty with sepia toning, specially split toning is I find the toner does not behave the same way after the first print or so. Each print seems to take longer and is harder to get tone into the brightest highlights. You can add the additive to reactivate the toner (I'm using ST20), but this can give subtle tonal shift (towards brown). I find the wash after the bleach is critical, it has to be really thorough with FB paper, otherwise the brightest highlights remain bleached out and don't tone. In the end it s very difficult to get perfectly consistent results for a set of images if reusing toner. Be interested to get some opinions on this.

Probably worth mentioning, don't use a brushes you care about. Dedicate brushes to the purpose.

Will this method work for fiber-based paper? I'm worrying to tear emulsion off when remobing rubber mask :(
@PictorialPlanet7 ай бұрын
Try it but I think it'll work fine. The emulsion is strong when dry.
