The education in both countries is a lot more hardcore than the West and from what I know from Chinese education is that applying to top overseas universities is a lot easier than trying to compete for the top Chinese universities.

Yeah... When I heard the razor part I was "oh no"... I had more than a few lady friends including an ex-gf back during my teenager days who, if they had a razor on hand, they were cutting themselves. I remembered once I met my ex and our mutual friend at McDonald's. I saw them have bandages on their forearms and then I just said, "This again?" And walked out. They promised not to do that again but lest to say, these relationships didn't last long after that last straw for me. I mean, I didn't bail, I had always been there for them and their problems and recommended they see school counselors. But there is only so much help I can give them until they help themselves.

Once had a lady friend with cutting problem that developed to the point that she would do it over the most trivial things such as, say, not getting a ticket to a show she wanted. Me and some of her friend I know tried to talked to her, comfort her, etc. It worked for a bit at times, but then she would cut herself again even when she "swear it will be the last time" and its just "a relapse in judgement". Eventually we give up too, as it seems that she herself doesn't want to change. Fortunately tho last time we have reunion she already stopped cutting herself. She got a stable job and even a fiancée. When one of my friend asked her how she overcome it, the base line of what she said is "I decide that enough is enough, and I want to change for the better. I accept that I have my own weakness and tried to overcome it, instead of blaming the situation around me. I want to do it for myself." So yeah. Support from the others help, for sure. But if they themselves don't want to change, well they will just keep doing it.
