Nice work Matty. If you want to divide knurling into bands, it is usually easier to do 1 large area, then mark your bands out with texta and turn the lower sections in. You can visualise the part with the layout easier, get your proportions right and chamfer the band edges in one step.

Hi Matty, trust the cancer treatments are working and you're starting to feel better. Keep the old pecker up. You'll lick the bastard yet. Just watched this video, part one anyway, and two questions come to mind. What range of holes will this cover? I have a set of imperial transfer punches from about 1/8" to 1/2" in 1/64" intervals. My problem is usually electrical conduit sizes from 1/2" to about 11/2" sizes. I'm guessing with the inner at 1" that's going to be a max of 15/16" reliably. Maybe I'll have to make two if I'm going to cover to 11/2". The answer to the second question is probably in part two, but what holds the sliding bit inside the main body? Greetings from Canada's banana belt.🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🇺🇦🕊️🇦🇺🐨👍

Gday Ron, from memory I think this one will do up to a 24mm hole roughly, the centre portion is held in with a set screw and slot, you’ll see this in part 2, I gave this one to my nephew and haven’t gotten around to making another one yet, thanks for watching mate, cheers

If I was planning on building a good scissor type knurling tool Matty? Then I'd borrow the design Eagle Rock uses. Scroll down to the 8th picture from the top. www.eaglerockonline.com/knurling-tools-form-type/ the PDF should give enough information to scale a drawing off it to come up with your own version. Every shop made knurling tool design I've seen is always built far too light. It's not just the amount of pressure you apply to the knurling wheels to help form the knurling, it's also the side forces the tool see's while traversing along the part on knurl lengths longer than the width of the knurl wheels. And a weakly supported set of wheels allows them to partially twist as the knurling tool is traversed on the part. That's generally what causes a visual spiraling effect instead of having the diamond pattern in a straight line along the part. There's not a single set of cheap off shore knurling wheels that are worth buying. Good knurling requires very good, well formed and sharp knurling wheels to start with. After that a large amount of either flood coolant or cutting oil needs to be continuously applied to help wash off the small metal particles the knurling process creates. If there not washed off as the knurling is being formed they continue to get impressed back into the knurl as it deepens. Without doing so even good knurling wheels can't produce the best knurling possible.
