For over 20 years, Lena and Martin's pavilion has stood at the end of the Schweinstal in the Palatinate Forest. In the middle of greenery and yet also right next to the family's natural stone plant. Halls in which the sandstone blocks from the nearby quarry are processed with heavy saws set the pace in the valley.
The fact that Lena's and Martin's pavilion is hexagonal is due to the steel construction that Martin's father found by chance on scrap metal many years ago. The heavy girders then lay on the site for several years until there was finally time to derust them, paint them and finally erect them. You can't see much of the construction anymore, to the outside it is a sandstone pavilion. There is one large room on each of the two floors, so they live on a total of just 75 m².
However, the pavilion was not always intended as a living space. At first, it was used as a workshop, storage space and exhibition area, until Martin made it his own and moved in.
Lena moved in a few years later. The two got to know each other while climbing in the sandstone cliffs in the Palatinate Forest. The natural course of the layers, the diverse shades of color and the interesting feel of the surfaces are always fascinating for the two of them. In addition, it is a natural building material, very durable and you can build almost anything with it. Accordingly, sandstone can be found again and again in their pavilion in various furnishing details where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find it: on the sofa, on the bed legs or on the coffee table.
"It's important to me that everything is made of clever material, not plastic" says Martin. "I like stone and wood - beautiful furniture that comes from the region. And when you move in new, you should first live in the empty space, build a relationship that grows slowly. Then you can set everything up well" That's exactly how Martin did it.
Since the steel structure was a find from the scrap yard and the stones for house construction and interior finishing came from the family's own business, the real cost of the pavilion can't really be named. And since Martin is also a big fan of "upcycling", there are many old things in and around the pavilion from which he has built something great. Among them are many old machine parts from the quarry that have been discarded. The whirlpool was once an excavator shovel, the fire bowl he built from the chain drive of an excavator. Or the gargoyles on the facade of the pavilion. They come from an old church in Kaiserslautern. When the gargoyles were renewed, Martin supplied the sandstone - and saved the old ones from the dumpster.
A few meters away from the pavilion between the production halls is the "Rust Room," an important retreat for Martin. This used to be the workshop where the machines were repaired. When the company's offices moved into the upper floor, it became too noisy and, in terms of fire technology, too dangerous. The workshop had to move and the space was vacated. Much is still the same here as it was in the past - the patina gives the "Rust Room" an authentic atmosphere. The cozy sitting area with wine rack and stove is, of course, new. His father's old Jaguar is also parked here. Martin has known the family car since childhood. He spent eight years restoring the car. But the "Rust Room" is rarely about cars. This is his place to relax and meet friends.
Living and working are very close to each other for Martin. That has advantages and disadvantages. Work is always present, and he has to find his own freedom here. But on the other hand, he lives in Schweinstal with his Lena in the middle of nature and far away from the hustle and bustle. This also means a piece of freedom.
