I think 'Violets' by Kyung-Sook Shin might fit your summer reading vibes. I found it very melancholic and its a bit more slice of life vibes. I also recommend 'Everyone in this room will someday be dead' by Emily Austin. It is a sad girl book with a little bit of humour.

As for Murakami, I recently also read his two books for the first time. And if his novel "after dark" (my the very first novel by Murakami) was an interesting experience and I loved it. I've read it very quickly and decided to read another of his novels and I chose "Kafka on the shore". Well, it's true he has a very strange depiction of the female characters and sex. It's very uncomfortable to read and I'm going to need some time to read another novel written by him
@cherrienjung9 ай бұрын
oof. thanks for this. ngl i’m scared to start murakami in the summer.. hope you recover tho 🫠

@@cherrienjung haha thanks 😩 but I still hope that this novel of his that you chose will be interesting! and I wrote a comment before I heard that in the future you want to try to read Kafka on the shore or the Norwegian wood. my advice is to find information about trigger warnings. lot's of stuff quiet disturbing. btw thank you for the video and I hope you have a wonderful week 🫶🏻

Hello, we share the same taste when it comes to books it seems. I also read Crying in H Mart and loved it. I read the first book of the trilogy of Rachel Cusk and I have Outline waiting for me. I have Yellowface on my TBR but I haven't read it yet, I had read mixed reviews but your opinion makes me want to pick it again. I haven't read Murakami yet for exactly the same reasons as yours ! I also follow Lauren's account, I also follow the Booker Prize and the Women Prize for recommandations and my library has a great selection of books in English (I live in France). Also Goodreads and a few KZbinrs I follow give me good recommandations about books !

I read Murakami’s Norwegian Woods and I have not recovered since then… personally, I also don’t click with his style of writing and his depiction of sexuality which is why I would kinda avoid his works anytime I went to a bookstore. This does not mean that he is a bad writer by anyway, it just that I find it difficult to fully grasp his ideas. (I also highlighted every misogynistic and sexist comment he has on female bodies in Norwegian Woods…)

i thought the same too, now im reading colorless and currently contemplating on why he describes women like that. I guess it's because all the stories are based on "my bad counter with women" so that's why it's all bad prejudice. Unless one time he decides to write about a nice happy go round story and he still describes women the same as before, then he's just purely maidenless 😭😭😭😭
