I attended a training workshop on Self-Compacting Concrete that was organised at the University of Illinois, Chicago, following the successful completion of SCC2013. In this video, you can see how testing of fresh property of SCC is done; The Slump test, J-Ring test, Penetration Apparatus test for Segregation, Normal segregation test, U-Box test, Rheology parameters with a rheometer. This is a private video that I recorded on that day. We have expanded on our understanding of SCC, and have given it a self-healing property as well.

Hello, I am currently writing my dissertation on Optimum mixture of Self compacting concrete, i was wondering if you could give me a guide on what i absolutely have to cover

There isn’t an appropriate mix design standard for self-compacting concrete. Depending on the expected quality and use, the strength and workability can be adjusted using water-cement ratio and admixtures respectively. Other supplementary cementitious materials can be used to achieve the desired properties of concretre. So, what is optimum? This will totally depend on the expected end result of SCC. If you want high strength, then optimum will be different from when you only want high workability, and vice versa. So, depending on the job, optimum will be different. However, we can rely on the tests of fresh properties for expected hardened properties. Tests like slump, V-funnel test, L-box, and flow time, become important in attempting to come up with an optimum mixture of self-compacting concrete. An optimum mix should thus be able to pass all tests of what should be categorized as self-compacting concrete. And by playing around with the mix design parameters, you can be able to achieve SCC with different properties, such as strength, slump, and others.

Are all these tests necessary for the acceptance of self-compacting concrete? Which ones are basic ones for field tests of SCC?

Most of these as said in the video are laboratory tests; for field concrete, some of these properties are known prior, and only a few like the slump could be conducted on site, as may be the ease.

I think this depends on standard. I know it is between 350mm to 700mm depending on design

Is there a reason why the slump cone was placed upside down?

For SCC slump testing, the orientation of the cone does not significantly affect the result. However, t50 measurements are different for the two orientations.

I've done hundreds of these tests....still don't like it. Only upside is casting cylinders and doing an air test with no consolidation.

I am glad to hear that. For what studies were you doing the tests? Field work?

@@mkayondo it was field work for flood walls and retaining walls. Incredibly high-strength stuff too. Specifications for 4000 to 4500psi with consistent 7000-8000psi breaks.

Don't looked to good using your hand, You need a bucket, that way Your demonstration don't look so sloppy... I mix self compacting or leveling concrete all the time, by my self, it's not a Big deal....
