After 30 seconds, the flash mode changes. Install it, close the door, wait 60 seconds, open the door, and if it's the FAST pattern, then yes, it turned off. If it's the SLOW pattern then no, it didn't, you need to move the magnet.

Instead of slamming the door and looking for broken red plastic, make a cone of plasticine/blue tac, stick it to where you'd like to mount the light, cover it with a bit of cling film and shut the door on that - It'll get squashed and you can measure the thickness of the squashed blue tac

Although I have a Wrangler and that is an option, I seriously doubt that I'll ever do it since around here, that would just mean water, road grime, and mud in the vehicle. Plus, it's so hot and humid here, I'll never remove the hard top either. If you live somewhere with little rain, humidity, and not excessive heat, removing the doors and top would be nice.

I bet that void in the car door sill is for a light or reflector that is put on either previous models, or higher end models. Funny, my ‘01 bug had lights in the door like that, but my ‘13 one just has a reflector. 🤗

About the HMRC (well, sort of, from a German perspective): It is much easier to go after the local warehouses of chinese sellers than it is to go about getting taxes or tariffs from goods sent from China/Hong-Kong/Singapure/Malaysia to private individuals in GB/Germany/EU. At least that is the case for German law. The person who is responsible for paying the needed taxes and tariffs is the importer. If a private person imports, they often don't do it the "legal" way. Customs often let it go through, depending on the size and the shipping service used and just dumb luck. I personally don't order stuff for more than 22€ since that is the limit after which I have to pay VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer, 19%) and since DHL started charging for their "loan" of that payment (about 10 or 15€ per order I think), it is way too costly to import from China in most instances if you go above 22€. I can declare it myself but it is a hassle, I need an ID for the customs office and have to keep track of more paper work etc. But if the seller has a warehouse in your country, he is (in theory) the importer and thus has to pay VAT/tariffs on the items in his warehouse, like any other British/EU based importer (like Apple importing iPhones from China). That cost is then usually passed on to the consumer, thus why EU goods of the same Chinese origin but sold by lawful businesses are more expensive. I guess some sellers get around that somehow and HMRC is miffed about that. Amazon has some sort of issue with that as well (in Germany at least). They handle some (obviously) Chinese items for Chinese sellers via their shipping and handling business (very convenient for me), but somehow no one pays VAT for it and the German gov't is sorta pissed. These days, a lot of warehouses from Chinese sellers are in the EU and I tend to buy middle-priced items from them (they sometimes still come from outside, but instead of 4 to 6 weeks, it takes 7 to 10 days or so to arrive). It's a bit more costly (TH6600 stepper drivers for 7€ instead of 4.5€) but I don't have to watch the 22€ limit and it comes earlier. Bremen, Flensburg and Frankfurt seem to be liked by them.

Probably the power consumption of the classic 555 chip is higher than this more efficient micro's... not because it's activated for long, but in case someone leaves the door cracked longer, the button battery could be depleted. By the way the pattern flashing might be designed as power saving feature especially when it starts blinking each led individually (only one led on at any given moment).

This is actually a brilliant idea, I deliver newspapers and I'm constantly in and out of the car. Sometimes if there's no traffic, I'll leave the door open to save the wear and tear on my plastic door handles (it's a Toyota, door handles are a common failure point, and I'm only out of the car 20-30 seconds at most each time) but there's always that chance someone is going to come speeding through... These would be (hopefully) more noticeable than reflective dots! My car doesn't have a rubber "doink" if I remember correctly. LOL But it's worth tossing a couple bucks at to see if I can find a way to make it work.

Volvos used to come with lights (powered off the car battery) on the door edges, as a standard feature, which I always thought was a good idea. Then Ford bought Volvo cars in 1999 and did some cost reduction.... by 2000 they were no longer fitted! They must have saved a fortune..... not.

I think that a lot of car manufacturers figured out that reflectors work just as well as the lights. If it is daylight, then the lights might not be that visible, but since you can see the door itself opening, that is probably not that big of a deal. At night, you're driving a car with headlights, so a reflector works well enough.

I think the idea is great but the issue I see with this is it isn't very bright and from a distance behind a vehicle may not be visible or may appear to be a light on something further down the road because it is a lot dimmer than other lights on the vehicle. This could actually fool someone into thinking there is no open door if they can see a light further down the road. Also, with the door wide open it won't be facing towards the back where traffic is most likely to be coming from. Cars I have seen with warning lights on the door have had it placed on the inside, not on the end, of the door to be seen from behind when the door is wide open but I imagine some may have it on the end too. Of course each country has their idea of what is required or allowed. Lit up like a fire truck is your best bet, right? LOL Just my opinion but I think really good retro reflective tape put inside the door AND on the end would work well. One advantage of this is it works even with dead battery or power failure after an accident. Likely most people would go "ewww that's ugly so I'm not doing that." Having been rear ended by someone texting while I was on the side of the road I'd vote for saving my ass over aesthetics anytime although if someone doesn't have their eyes on the road your best bet is super @#$%!ing bright strobes that they actually see lighting up the inside of their car and make them look up.

One way to check whether suitable space exists around a car door for these is to put a large blob of blu-tac in the desired area and close the door to flatten it to fit the space. Then just either measure the compressed thickness of the blu-tac or compare it directly to one of the modules. Simples!

Next time, try putting it magnet side first, place the adhesive pad on the lamp and Peel off the paper over the adhesive and close the door. Pst Presto, the light should be set on the right place, perfectly aligned. Thanks for another informative video.

1:56 - The first generation of Škoda Fabia had two types of these - reflective glass (if it was car with basic equipment) and light with 12V bulb. I had first generation of Škoda Fabia (with basic equipment) as company car and there was only reflective glass on each door. Now i have third generation of Škofa Fabia (with medium equipment) and there's absolutely no lights on doors.

Perhaps 4 separate "M"s on the stickers (albeit one incomplete) might be worth one 3M. Who knows? Actually, when I buy such aftermarket car addons, I usually have to replace their sticky tape, which falls off after a couple of days with a proper 3M one, which simply works every time.

The spot you shown is going to be fairly common but some cars it's occupied. The one control I can think of off the top of my head that's roughly in that spot is a child safety lock. The factory very likely punched those sheets identical for front and rear doors but only punched out the hole on the rear doors, possibly even shared that particular sheet with other car's rear doors. If you don't have a spot and are determined, could always find someone good at shaping metal to hammer an indent into the door for it, something that size wouldn't be too difficult to accommodate without changing the shape of the door in the process.

I hope people will not use this as a replacement for looking before opening doors. It will not come on soon enough to prevent dooring, or in avoiding the door the cyclist will still end up falling, or under the car following them (likely to close). I suggest always open the door with the hand furthest from the door, this tends to turn your head making it easer to see oncoming road users. But a good idea if used correctly.

Yes, it also to get that last look in, also if becomes a habit. It is a practice promoted by the Dutch safety people. On crowded streets there can be a lot of obstruction and blind spots.

It's no substitution for people looking before opening their doors. Get one of those annoyingly bright strobing front lights that gives any epileptic an attack in a 1 mile radius. I've held out so far but with the potential for someone to say "didn't you see my cheap Chinese door flasher" I think I'll now go for it.

superdau true. It might help in the dark a bit if they open it slowly and you are far enough away. Both of my crashes it wouldn't have helped. 20mph and opened just in front of me. Got a new bike and some good cash though so it wasn't all bad.

A car just parked ahead on your right, and cars zooming by from behind on your left. With anywhere from 1 to 2 meters of space in between them for you to ride trough. *It's not a good idea* to give a car-door's width of clearance if you have to suddenly swerve into the path of heavy traffic to do so. Plus it's hard to estimate if they want to exit the vehicle immediately or are they stalling and checking their phone still.

I guess the fact that it times out might help tell you if the magnet is doing its job properly when the door is closed. Close the door, wait for a while for the time-out to take effect (should the lights still be running unseen) and then open the door. If the lights don't come on, you know they've timed out.

That 'odd' effect is 3 LED's switching, each with the same duty cycle. Try blocking off each one in turn, with your thumb or finger, and you’ll see it clearly. Nice idea, but useless in daylight, or when a cyclist or driver is not looking where they're going. There was something similar, on various cars, decades ago: It used 12V filament lamps mounted in the door, wired in parallel to the cabin courtesy light, and operated by the door switch. Simple and reliable. Another, even more reliable, option is to use one or more flashing LED's, with resistors, and a door-mounted micro switch or reed relay. No need for a PIC, capacitors, resistors, or other semiconductor devices. Again, it can be wired to the door switch.

If a CR2032 lithium cell has a capacity of 235 mAh and the off position current draw is 22 uAh the battery will last 10,682 hours or 445 days, prob ~1 yr at most if used regularly.

You can find out where it might fit using a bit of modeling clay (or a flour dough-ball). Stick it to the car where you want to test, and put a bit of talc/flour on the high spot so it won't stick to the both sides. Use a ball that is a bit larger than the device/magnet combo, and then close the door. It will be smashed down to the available-space size.

I wouldn't actually worry so much about whether it fits into a car door, but more about whether the magnet is close enough to turn it off, when the door is closed, since there will be a space of several mm to bridge between the hall effect sensor on the door and the magnet on the car body. Clive, could you somehow test that? I know, it's a riddle just like how to know whether the light in the refrigerator goes off when the door is closed, but I'm sure you'll find a way!

Maybe worth scoping the 3 LEDs... They could reduce peak consumption by sequencing the LEDs within each ‘on’ period... so it’s only ever driving one LED at a time. Say 10mA on, vs 30mA on. Small saving, but may help the battery life?

Any old cop will tell you that that strange effect is called a wig-wag, back in the day our squad cars were set up with a switch that threw our headlights into that (well the bright side at any rate) and many undercover cars here in the US had bright blue and red lights behind the grill that used the wig-wag effect to draw the attention to the folks who were in your way when seconds count in life blood.

Just a thought... Basically, can't this be done with a CMOS version of good, old 555 like ICM7555 (TLC555 from TI). As I've heard, some of them work from 2V upward and also have an Iout of around 100mA. Temperature drift does not matter for the application. Of course, no fancy flashing mode changes but purpose is warning not disco dancing...

Reminds me of some LED cupboard lights I bought from Poundstretcher many years ago that used a similar solid state switching setup with a cheap magnet stuck on a door, though they were quite rubbish, the batteries conked out after a week... :P

I was actually thinking tachometer for electric motors.. 9/10 when you get a treadmill motor the rpm / mph/ kph sensor is broken.. there is usually a pully with a magnet attached and a reed or a typical pull on switch deal that communicates an i/o with the main cpu on the board that im assuming has an algorithm that equates the size of the pully and magnet spacing to ticks the switch pings back to speed.. i have gotten several over the years and only had one actually work, until i poked it and it just stuck open like the rest. I’ve found that the security system window or door open sensors work great for a tach on that set up.

If I had to build this I would just use a 555 and a reed contact. BTW I like the Skoda Fabia. I had one until about 1 year ago but it had to go because I got a lot of discount for a new golf. The Fabia never hade any problems in its 13 years I was driving it.

So if you couldn’t tell if it turned off when you closed the door, you could keep it closed for a minute, and if you see the first stage of blinking you could probably be reasonably safe to assume it turned off.

If you feel it would be within the scope of this channel, I would appreciate a discussion of the reasoning for chosing a negative leg vs positive leg switch in a given circuit.

You could use a photoresistor and some thin wires to test the lights while the door it closed

well we can assume that they went for open drain gpio pins on the uC but then the 27ohms resistor is the only thing between the led and ground (apart from the tiny channel resistance of the fet inside the uC so i wonder what current these things are running at and how good their lifeexpectancy is. 27ohms is way too little for my taste

I never see things like that here in the USA. We must make sure the way is clear and that it is safe before we open the door to get out. If someone opens their door into traffic here in the USA It is their fault if it gets struck by another vehicle.

You need to check local vehicle lighting regulations. Here in Australia, ANY flashing light HAS to be Amber on a vehicle, other than on an emergency vehicle.

jos Touw - No, I was rather hoping that a vehicle with flashing brake lights would be pulled over / stopped so that the driver could be warned / educated that his / her driving needed to improve. As it is poor for efficiency and annoying for a driver following them.

@@jostouw4366 Under the UK Highway Code both the cyclist should pass with clearance space and the vehicle occupant should check before opening. I would expect the same common sense to apply in any other country. PS. I'm both cyclist and driver of many years experience.

Though I struggle to envision a scenario where these lights would be the difference between knowing a door was open or closed, I suppose more visibility is never a bad thing.

I've gotten my fingers closed in a car door a few times. There is obviously space there or my fingers would be gone. The front passenger door is open, I think they are leaving it open so I can use the door frame as leverage to get out of the back seat, and they trap me in the door. I hate that. I hope that I just insist on the front passenger closing the door first before trying to get out of the back in the future, but I'm only human. My poor, poor fingers...

Unfortunately, these things don't seem to be allowed in European cars, and it's probably because of the flickering, so if they were a steady light, I'd feel much more comfortable with them, and I really like the idea of that. One could put one on each door on the left side of the car and would be much safer when parallel parking, especially when riding with passengers on the left side behind you. Would it be possible to somehow modify these to stay on constantly, maybe by connecting 2 pins together or so?

@@bigclivedotcom Interesting. Is the animation important? They seem rather small diameter at practical distances, but if they "twinkle" that's something. I used to hate animated indicators but after years of moaning about indicators being swamped by headlights I've realized I'm completely wrong and animation might be rather useful.
