"A strike is a block" is a good principle. It is used in both one and twohanded sword fighting. However, this form of "Block striking" doesn't make use of any of the canes advantages. Similar to sword fighting it would be better to "strike defensively". With a simple diagonal swing you'll strike through any attack the swing meets, while making use of the full reach advantage of the cane. A mid swing cane is also much harder to grab.
