We just got permitless carry on Florida, my friend wanted to show me his new micro Kimber. He spent like 8 seconds fishing it out of his pocket. It was just floating in his pocket. I shook my head, ran to my house and got him my pocket holster and spent about 2 minutes explaining how I carry it in my pocket and had him practice drawing it out of his pocket. Then told him to practice daily. Oh, also didn't have one in the chamber because he was scared the pistol would be facing him in his pocket. I explained how I pocket carry and gave him details on how to use it more effectively.

Agree that the draw decision is primary. I don't think I'd short sell accuracy that far. I certainly agree that one needs to realize that the best measure of your accuracy is those first two shots off the draw -- and one should structure their practice sessions accordingly. (There's often a question of footwork as you draw and find your sights too, but thats another discussion.)
@KuronoCthulhu5 ай бұрын
For some people, either because of inherited firearms/lack of funds/ or most commonly wrist injuries/crippling arthritis, they only carry in 22lr or 22mag. In that case I would say accuracy is extremely important and should be practiced because body shots are less likely to stop an attacker. That said, best thing is to carry a most potent round, but some people do not have that option.

1. The most important decision is to always be situationally aware. 2. The next important decision is to pay money for an instructor to teach you how to shoot accurately and reload while walking and running. The following is a drill sprung on a class before the class formally started. 1. The class was taken out on the range to stand in front of the individual target at arms distance away. 2. The target would be the base on the throat for all shots. 3. On the whistle you would draw from holstered. 4. During the entire drill, you would be backing up 20 feet with people backing up with you and constantly firing. 5. You never stop walking/moving. 6. You shoot and reload as you are walking/moving 7. You empty your handgun and do at least two reloads while walking that 20 feet. I had no problem. By the end of the class, everyone could do it. The Lt. Col. in charge of a foreign special operations unit in a foreign country brought his team over for the training after he learned how to do it. What was done was the equivalent of a beat policeman having to engage and function while moving. I mention this. I was trained in OODALOOP. Look it up. A classmate was being held up at a gas station at gunpoint. He drew from concealed and killed the perp on the spot. Drawing. I had an instructor who insisted that drawing was done in 5 stages. Wrong. If you learn to do that and foul up while drawing, you will automatically start over. In the class mentioned above, all the instructor had to do was show the class the framing on target once the draw was accomplished. The student would be properly and consistently framed while shooting and moving - no twisting, turning, flailing of arms.

Good rundown, draw and when to draw is super important like you said. Accuracy is right up there though, if you can't hit what you're aiming at you're just as likely to become the bad guy as the actual bad guy, God forbid you send a round somewhere it doesn't belong.
@Steve-xo5pq5 ай бұрын
I always appreciate how objective and realistic mike is when it comes to self defense, but I think when it comes to guns, his view is skewed by the fact that not only is he a martial artist, but he has formal training with firearms, and probably has a lot more practice than most people, not just with shooting, but dealing with high stress situations. Mike, you said yourself, if you do not know how to grapple, you're just brining a gun for the other guy. Most people are not going to put in that much effort. They're going to go out, and buy a gun thinking it's an easy solution, and maybe shoot a few times first. Some might go to the range more regularly, but you of all people should know how stressful any situation that involves a gun is. The average person is not going to take martial arts classes just so the can feel safe carrying a gun without it being grappled away from them. Also the average person does not have SWAT training, and is going to be shitting their pants in any situation like that. I don't like seeing people being encouraged to carry without that context. If you're just looking to feel safer in a high crime area, there are a lot better options though don't require constant practice (which you yourself said as much in your video with Seth talking about self defense weapons).

I worry that maybe I would hesitate because in my practice I am not actually willing to rip the buttons off my flannel. Good stuff noted here.

Here’s the most important thing to know for concealed carry: do not ever, never, ever, never pull the firearm out. Just don’t do it. Just do not ever unholster that smoke wagon. I say this, because if you ever really had to, you’d know it and just do it. But having the mindset not to will keep you out of jail. Or worse.

But, my friends said that there have boxing gym and a karate gym. Should I continue with kickboxing or go to one of those gyms? What's your advice?

Continuing with an instructor that isn't going to help build you back up is a bad idea, doesn't matter what you're training in. Putting you with a more experienced opponent is one thing, but he's then supposed to show you why you lost, what you need to work on to improve. Whatever gym you're at sounds like a clown show.

I don’t think most people debate a lot about what gun they think is best because they think it’s the highest priority. I also feel like most people that do talk about what gun you pick are people trying to sell you a gun. I also partly disagree with your ideas of shooting capability. Basic bullseye style shooting is poop in terms of self defense. But if you can draw and shoot precisely at a very aggressive pace, then that would be a very good skill to have.
