Self-efficacy is a branch of self-esteem, along with self-respect, and self-image. Living with a contradiction in your life, such as, I love my wife, I'm trying to sleep with another woman, will not effect your general self-efficacy but will damage your self-respect leading to a lowered self-esteem. Self-esteem requires a feeling of competence and a feeling of worthiness.

An internal locus of control is a quality important to me in other people- I didn't realize till it was spelled out. Excuses are a detriment to growth of character and spirit.

Just a thought - is it possible that someone with low self-esteem fit into both internal and external loci of control? ie performed bad in an exam and blamed themselves; performed well and attribute it to easy marking?

Desmond Chong Yes that's called a depressive attributional style. People don't just attribute events to completely internal or completely external causes, they tend to mix them. Your average person with a good sense of self esteem and self efficacy would do the opposite and generally attribute negative events to external causes and positive events to internal causes, so the theory goes. It's actually a lot more complex and there are other dimensions but those are the basics.

+Rowboaty That makes a whole lot more sense. When there's a whole website dedicated to rating teachers it tells me that these people are falling into equal traits.

It's such an interesting thing because as I was listening to this I was thinking: It's weird that I have very poor self-esteem but at the same time, I feel extremely capable in most situations. Then the video said exactly that XD

We can increasing or decreasing our self efficacy and it depends on several things, such as : 1. Performance accomplishment. Our achievements in the past can affect our self efficacy. If we get a good achievement, it will increase our self efficacy and vice versa 2. Vicarious Experience. We can increase our Self Efficacy by watching others achievement. It's like motivate ourself. But, it will decrease when we see someone that we think have the same abilities as us and then they fail. 3. Social Persuation. Others believe on us can increase our self efficacy. 4. Emotional Psychological States. Strong emotions can decrease our self efficacy but sometimes it can increase too.

Someone with an Internal Locus of Control. Wouldn't they needlessly blame themselves for things in their life that aren't in their control? This is what causes phobias & hyper-vigilance in people with PTSD. There's a part of their mind insisting that they can avoid what happened from happening again, if they just try hard enough, if they just control hard enough, if they just stay alert enough, be vigilant enough at all times. :(

Having an internal-locus-of control doesn’t mean you blame yourself for what’s truly out of your control. It means you don’t blame external factors inappropriately and you give yourself the credit for your hard work/efforts appropriately.

I have Internal locus of control, Average Self-steem and low Self Efficacy on my personal relationships. How can i fix that?! I dont really see any one around that i can relate to as a social model. I dont know, its like every one is doing ok but i get freaked and burn my chances... im telling you, the feeling is like geting inside a hungry lion cage... Now at least i know my issue is at self efficacy.. now how to fix it is not at the video

Where can I find methods for going from External locus of control to internal? Has it been proven that it is possible to do that change? Or is that something that happens in childhood and structures you for life? If it is possible to change, that would mean that it is possible to re-motivate someone?

The whole thing is nonsense. For example In American society, more often than not, you don't really have a choice or choices you have are equally bad. Suppose your teacher is unfair, doesn't do her work, and shifts all the blame on you. In the American education system, you don't have many choices actually. Your teachers act like "dictators" and nothing stopping them from doing whatever they want. In the UK, for example, your grades are determined by objective exams which are developed by examiners hired specifically for that purpose. You know the content and grading methods years in advance. So, guys in the UK might be found to have an "internal locus of control" while US ones "external", but in reality, it's the environment that determines what "locus" they have. Now, suppose, for example, you are a natural doormat or you have been trained to be doormat since young (hee). You do whatever your teacher asked you to do. For you, other guys are just having an "external locus of control" or "depressed" while you "internal locus". It gives you an ego boost and an excuse to judge others but not much substance.
