Thankyou!!! Yes metal doesn't crack or does under humidity like wood and canvas can - but Copper was always too expensive!(I think Rembrandt used it sometimes but they were expensive to get panels back then) Now that they make it into a panel with a thick chunk of plastic and some aluminium is much cheaper and easier ❤️

Thanks Liz! So fun to watch you paint this. Wondering how you managed with all the reflection, though! Looks fabulous.
@LizGridleyArtist3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori!! I'll be honest I found it very challenging - I was quite tentative adding colour (lots of tiny blobs that eventually knitted together) because it took me a while to figure out what colours would work on the warmth, once I covered the flesh area with one pass it was a bit easier to see the road ❤️
@lorismith603 жыл бұрын
@@LizGridleyArtist i expect it would play with my colour senses in 'reading' what was actually going on. But what fun! I'd been thinking of trying a copper surface so this was especially helpful to watch. I like your colour blobs knitting together!

Did you have to do any sanding anywhere before painting? Great work. Great look.
@LizGridleyArtist4 ай бұрын
No not at all, real Copper naturally gross onto the oil and bonds - that's why it's a substrate that Rembrandt sometimes used. The expense is the main reason it isn't used more widely

Love your painting style and your work.And can I know which company brushes and the type of hair you use for your paintings.
@LizGridleyArtist3 жыл бұрын
Ooh I'll have to rewatch and see what I used - in general I use a combination of synthetic and natural hairs (whatever is on sale!) Gives me a min and I'll figure it out ❤️
@LizGridleyArtist3 жыл бұрын
Figured them out! I start the painting using these two: Raphael red sable 'fresco' filbert (probably one of the most expensive brushes I own) & a DaVinci College filbert Then I use almost exclusively a cheap ArtBasics Taklon angle shader to bring it all together & add detail. I love the angle shader shape, I wish I could get more with different types of filament, but the cheap taklons work great

Yes! 100% oil paints ❤️
@ArtbyJoeH2 жыл бұрын
Nice! So copper doesn't require any kind of preparation, the way canvas requires gesso?
@LizGridleyArtist2 жыл бұрын
Not for oil paint - it in its raw state wants to grip onto any oil it comes into contact with (including finger prints so be careful!)

Very impressive!, what type of varnish did you use in the end and for how long did you leave it to dry? Also I see you made your own frame, wow such great work!
@LizGridleyArtist2 жыл бұрын
Thankyou! Retouch Varnish is what I use when I need to protect the piece and it's only touch dry (as in i can press my finger nail on the surface and it doesn't dent) other permanent varnishes should only be used after 6-12 months 👍
@LizGridleyArtist2 жыл бұрын
Also sorry I can't take credit for the frame, that shit was from the framing store 'frames now' 😊

@@LizGridleyArtist Then you suggest if I wanted to sell my painting I would have to add the retouch varnish and then 6 months down the line ad a permanent varnish?

What beautiful luminance you achieved with the skin! Is the copper typically more expensive than a wood panel?

@LizGridleyArtist3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean varnish? I use a retouch or gamvar varnish after the paint is dry to protect it yes ❤️

@@LizGridleyArtist maybe varnish yes.. Some artist also use lacquer but only after some moths when painting is totally dry already)

Hi not sure if you reply but I’m a new artist and I struggle with shading so I was wondering if you can make a video doing that
@LizGridleyArtist3 жыл бұрын
When you say shading, do you mean working in pencils and dry media? Or balancing shadows in a painting like this one?
@burak56013 жыл бұрын
Awesome work as always Liz, very well done. Such an interesting surface choice, must be quite slicky to paint on, not to mention the shiny glare and orangy warmth of the copper. These kind of smooth surfaces makes me think that painting would crack and flake off when the paint is completely dry since there is not enough tooth on surface for paint to hold on to but I’m seeing more and more artistsusing these aluminum panels without even sizing or priming. Have you ever experience such issues with aluminum or other metal surfaces, in the long term? Are these surfaces durable enough for artistic use?
@LizGridleyArtist3 жыл бұрын
Absolutly - I do get my aluminium panels treated with a conversion coating to stabilise oxidation and assist in paint hold. The copper however doesn't need that. I highly highly recommended JustPaint.org s articles regarding painting on metal - they've done great testing in multiple media. Most of the time artists do sand and prime the panels but this doesn't preserve the reflective Silver. Artefex (the brand who made this copper panel) also have heaps of information on their site) 😊
@brushstrokesfineartllc12082 жыл бұрын
@@LizGridleyArtist Great to know! How do you tread your copper so patina does not apply with time? Regarding priming copper, it is not necessary to do a coating on copper like you do aluminum, because copper is the most stable surface you can paint oil onto. Depending on heat copper still expands a little but never like canvas. Oil expands too through the years, so it lasts much longer than canvas or wood panels.
@trevorpummill8532 жыл бұрын
Can I varnish with gamvar? Or do you have a recommendation?
@LizGridleyArtist2 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely, just make sure your painting doesn't dent under a fingernail push - then it's dry enough for gamvar
