My friend Asa was a solid mechanic for 40+yrs ( sadly passed on now) his tried and true method was the same as yours. His reasoning you lower the risk of bending the ears of the shaft by hammering them in. My chosen method as well. PS loved the intro a nice nod to Rainman Ray.

I believe that dodge fit the 2 slip fits on the prop shaft to allow for the extending of the chassis as it falls apart. I guess that once the slip fits reach full extension it's time to get some work done. :)

Yes, the rear slip yoke compensates for rear suspension compression and extension changes during driving. The slip yoke on the front compensates for frame deflection (and "normal" failure).

The proper way to install a U-joint is to use whatever facilities you have that does not result in picking up and repacking the needle bearings into the cup or finding a needle between the bottom of the cup and the end of the cross. But none of that ever happened to me (roll eyes). Also I like the judicious use of paint witness marks. Much better idea than Hansel and Greta.

There's a lot of those fuel tanks that were perfectly fine when they were dug up. All gas stations had to change the underground tanks to double wall fiberglass tanks with leak sensors about fifteen years ago. We had had an underground diesel tank for a backup generator that had been in the ground for thirty years. So that's why there are so many of them still around.

The damage to the cross is a lubrication issue. When a u joint explodes the cross fractures with no point of origin. When a cross breaks, the fracture generally has the grease zerk hole as point of origin of which can be seen if you know how to read different metal fractures [my case it was a training class put on by Cummins engine in 1978]. i only work on u joint 1700 series up. When dealing with full round lub. failures that the cross has worn into the cap thus expanding the end to where there is no way it will press out, I cut the cross with the torch [like SMA did tutorial] this allows for the caps to be pushed in with no damage to yoke. A rotary sand paper wheel and yoke is good. I am with you 100% if cross wears through cap into yoke, replace yoke. In the truck 1700 series and up full rounds, most of the caps are rusted to the yoke. The torch makes quick work of cutting the cap outer bolt plate center weld to where the plate can be knocked off with air hammer. Cut the cross with wide cuts allowing yoke to go over torched cross and opposite yoke. Then use air hammer to push caps to the inside, no yoke damage. It was the Astro "Big Nasty" air hammer which made this process possible.

It doesn't matter what method is used to install u-joints. The main goal is make sure all of the needle bearings that were in it when it was in the box are in it after you install it.

I’ve hammered the apart and back together, used a Vice as a press, and used c clamps. Hammering apart on the side of the road with no clamp/ Vice is worst. I’ve changed them way too quick because I didn’t relieve the strain after installing a tight one. I had changed several before my Dad showed me how to relieve the “tightness”!

Back in the 60’s, there were no presses and every u-joint I replaced went in with a vise, hammer, and luck. It worked over and over again and unlike every other part of a modern vehicle, the lowly u-joint has remained the same and you did a great job with this.

Good video, good job. In 48 years of wrenching I have never used a press to remove a u-joint, a ball peen and a vice. The one thing I have never done is clamp the driveshaft tube in the vice and hammer on the u-joint. I was always afraid of denting and bending the tube. I always open the vice wide enough for the u-joint yoke to rest on the vice and then I hammer away. Like you said everyone does it differently.

I have changed a few U joints in my life time and the absolute best way to do it is, whatever works...period! They are U joints and made to handle a ton of high force abuse. So hammer, press, vice are not going to harm them in the least. Thumbs Up! You need to upload move videos. Especially the electrical type where you use the schematic diagrams to troubleshoot the problem(s). I like watching you logically go through the troubleshooting method. Not many are capable of doing that. I love logical troubleshooting mtself.

This is an example of a person who doesn't understand the concept of Maintaining a vehicle that you put out good money and hope for a good investment on the purchase. I have had several vehicles that we were able to put on over 300,000 miles without an major problems. Yes spark plugs, filters, brake shoes, and many times grease the connections to maintain adequate steering. All good mechanics has his favorite striking device. Wes you do good work and make the job very easy to understand....

Wes I have done u joints this way for 25 years... no problems at all. As long as you don't knock out the needles and contaminate the grease, it will be just fine. If I had a shop as extensive as yours I would probably press them in once in a while... just to say I have done it that way too!

Many times I run a wheel cylinder hone through the yokes just a bit. The correct way to install a U joint is the way the indevidual is used to and works best for hm!

Thank God for my thermal camera. Spent months trying to figure out what the hell is going on… When the carrier bearing failed on my 2006 Nissan titan, scared the absolute shit out of me. It was just at a certain frequency/vibration it would start to vibrate like crazy at a certain speed above 40 miles an hour. , Sometimes it would just slowly stop and sometimes it would almost bounce down the road until I could gain control. Towed a few times, but we could never figure out what was wrong. Because when you grab the carrier bearing or driveshaft to try to move it around, it already popped back into place, because of the weird design and the strange rubber grommet like things that had half melted. And of course every time a tow truck would pull it up on the flatbed, it would jostle everything around and kind of click everything back into place and it might not show up again for another week or maybe even a month or two. Finally figured it out with my thermal camera and fixed it myself. Holy shit a thermal camera is so important especially for something like this. I justified the purchase because of my electronics/metrology/repair business… But it’s even more useful for mechanics folks Bought the truck new, I’ve done basically everything myself which is only included things like changing the oil, I think I put new plugs in it at 100,000 miles, and new brakes and stuff. And that’s about it. Got almost 500,000 miles on the truck now. Still drives great, but as someone with a machinist background and experience doing tool/die work… I know how the metal and components are stressed when driven hard… So I’ve always driven like a complete grandma. Pulled over for it several times as well 😂 whether acceleration, breaking , deceleration, turning, whatever..... I try and take it easy on the old gal I was about seven years old and was riding with dad to Gunnersville for a big bowfishing tournament. And his universal joint literally exploded. And left pieces stretch down three or 4 mile length of the interstate. Somehow he Jerry rigged it with bailing wire and duct tape in a few strips of that hardening fiberglass tape… We fished the tournament, even got it home, and the family mechanic cussed him for a month…

I changed a u-joint one time in highschool. I limped my 49 Ford to the auto parts store with the propeller shaft banging away. Changed it in the parking lot with a tool box I brought with me. Yes under the car with a bumper jack. Before battery drills were invented. Threw the old parts in their garbage can. Yes there are different ways of doing it. Some guys can't believe there is any other way to do it besides their way.

Buddy’s plow truck had a nasty vibration when you took your foot off the throttle. A pain to figure out, U joint was locked up in the rear driveshaft by the carrier bearing. I pulled the driveshaft for 3 joints and a carrier bearing. Came back the next day, he did the 1 u joint and tossed it back in🤣. Guess he had to plow quickly

21:01 Dumbest thing a person can change on a force induction engine. Hey let's sacrifice air filtration for cool noises. Every dusted engine I've seen... had a K&N or similar knock off "cold air intake". The second dumbest thing are coil spacers. Especially 3". That pulls the axle about an inch to the drivers side. Of course they leave the stock shock in there. Leave the steering wheel crooked. But hey it sure looks cool.
