I use the lines extensively when making buildings for my model railway.
@dandy193Ай бұрын
That is a good call. I have 7 of these mats and all the same. I guess they think we're all draughtsmen or something. Brush Magic I did not know about so that's now on order and all my mats are getting the treatment... Nice one
@martinoconnor4314Ай бұрын
I do use the lines on my mat quite often for scratch building, can't really say that I use them for kit building though.
@richardstiers9010Ай бұрын
I actually use the backside of a 600x900 mat. It is a cheap one with no marketing on the back. It is a beautiful background for my build post photos.
@MOS6510ModelsАй бұрын
yes i agree.. it helps the lens focus on the model not the lines
@DougD-j2hАй бұрын
I just use wax paper over top of my cutting mat, it makes it easier to clean up and I don’t worry about anything that spills. It helps to have a tool discount store nearby and wait for a 1/2 price sale on cutting mats.

forgot to say the Redgrass Games mat is a light grey and doesn't have any squares on it. It is aimed at wargamers, so there are various base sizes on it as well as paint mixing ratios. I think their biggest one is A2 though

@fenrishunter5005Ай бұрын
The problem is, that we modellers aren't the primary market for cutting mats; that would be sewers and quilters and other fabric-based hobbies/occupations where you *do* regularly use the lines. That being said, though, there are some model/miniature companies that have their own mats, and yeah, you'd think they at least would have some without the lines. It's wild that there doesn't exist any without lines anywhere. You'd think there would be some, at the very least from modeling/miniature companies or something. I know that there are cutting mats in industrial settings that you can get custom sized for different workbenches, maybe that might be something you could look into? Dunno what the cost is like, but you could get something perfectly sized to your whole bench. I've no idea if they do them in green though, all the ones that I've had experience with in the past were gray.
@MOS6510ModelsАй бұрын
but there a loads with tanks or spitfires on them.. so i guess its the market you employ these tactics on i guess matey
@john.s.fmcneal6583Ай бұрын
I just ignore them. It's safe cutting surface, table top doesn't get damaged or paint on it. Well most of the time no paint on the table.

Must admit, I would have to agree with you on this one. Yes to a plain cutting mat. Happy modelling and keep up the good work.
@BlowinshiddupАй бұрын
I have one of those mats. At least, I think I do, under the other mats and the pile of parts I need to sort and put in the greeblie drawers. I really need to make a sci-fi ship to use up the 40 years' worth of spare parts...

I have to agree with you that after some time the mat looks like hell when the lines wear off or you spill paint on it, but seems like a lot of work to get where you want it ! Nice Job however 👍👍

@SkyrayModelsАй бұрын
I wouldn't mind a plain cutting matt with a small 25mm Airfix or Revell etc logo in the top corner of the matt if that would inspire a manufacturer to print some for the plastic kit hobby market. I do prefer a plain matt, just because soon or later you know it's going to get some hot product splashed over it.
@jaredfinkenbinderАй бұрын
That'll cost you 4 times as much just because it's hobby related. My mat is from a quilting company.

Mass produce for one style fits all, and I expect they will charge double for the sake of not going through the printer head. With a bit of elbow grease you have got the style you wanted.

Hey Moss, I'm the same bud. I once spilled a bottle of cellulose thinners on my new A2 mat, and the printed lines just flew off! I'm well-chuffed with the blank mat after a wipe-down, lol.

The mats are for all hobbies not just plastic and glue scale modellers; the manufacturers won't make one specially for us, it's easier and cheaper just to make one and let people ignore what they don't need. I watch World of Wayne build part works and they often specify an exact length for a tube and the squares are ideal for that. I suppose if a model specifies an exact angle say for a wing dihedral the marks on the mat may come in handy. TBH if I don't need the markings I'd just ignore them. A0 is 47 "by 33" (roughly) so a bit deeper than you want MOS. A1 is 23" by 33". There's nothing the exact size you want.
@MOS6510ModelsАй бұрын
good shout but the camera fixes the focus on them which doesnt help lol
@lesthiele4921Ай бұрын
Hi Moss, the thing with us humans who partake in this hobby, is we are all different and have different ways of working in the hobby, as for me, I would not bother with getting rid of the lines, but like I said we are all different, and we all have different needs also, cheers mate, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
@MOS6510ModelsАй бұрын
thats true :)
@richardwl5773Ай бұрын
Don't use a cutting mat at all. I have a piece of protecting floor board on my bench. It gets completely hammered. I just flip it over and go again. And when both sides are wasted I just put in a new one. Sure it looks relaxing, organized and peaceful to start with a fresh canvas, but the way I model (total chaos), it gets cluttered within 30 minutes anyway. Perhaps one day I will try a mat. The lines or a picture don't bother me. Well, unless it's some physedelic hypnotizing pattern perhaps.

I think lines on mats is a worldwide government conspiracy aided by the Illuminati to drive Moss bonkers 😂😂😂 Pretty sure it's working 😂😂😂 BTW MI6 is going to sneak in and replace your mat with a proper lined mat 😂😂 I find the lines helpful when cutting maskings. But the whole mat doesn't need lines just a small section in a corner would suffice.
