this video has helped me realize i have more of a fear of new places/wide open places than social anxiety, like driving to a new place literally sends me into a spiral of anxiety

I plan on dropping some coins or knocking a bottle of shampoo from a shelf at a store, and when I do that,I wont laugh it off or see who is looking at me, I'll simply put it back as tho its not much of a deal, Its going to be hard because I cant stand being the centre of attention or appearing clumsy or weird, its going to be challenging but I got this 😊 Thankyou so much Magnus, I cant express how much all these videos have ignited that spark of hope in me, one that had been out for quite sometime now, I feel better just by having the thought of becoming better. ✨

An update; so I didnt end up dropping coins yesterday as we were in a hurry I forgot about the exposure therapy but once headed back I made my mind to give a take away order myself and pay for it BY MYSELF at the cashiere while people wait in the line. Ik to some of you reading this, it isnt much of a deal but due to my anxiety I never could order in a cafe infront of so many people, anyway, I arrive I take a deep breath and step into the cafe say my greetings to the man standing there and ask for an iced latte, now here comes a twist, I purposely brought money less than what I would order, I left it in the car and I said could I have some doughnuts too, and then I did it, I checked in my purse looking for the money I never brought inside and said nvm I'll just take the latte please keep the doughnuts back and to my surprise they were cooperative, this was a reality checking moment, was it really that worse of a situation? Idk and I dont care frankly, because I am happy to be able to stand with confidence under a situation I'd freak out in. Magnus,once again. Thankyou. (It got a bit lengthy,my apologies but I had to share it x )

Found this video series on reddit and so far its been very informative and inspiring! About the worksheets, I was wondering what the goal should be when the catastrophe thinking involves what others think. ie (people will be weirded out by how much I stare/ my demeanor towards them). Is the goal for me to understand that they are not weirded out by my actions or is it to rather to realize that it is not a big deal to be perceived to be weird?
@fordakacar
@fordakacar 4 жыл бұрын
I wonder this as well. I twitch a lot in social situations (and even when I’m not anxious), and I always assume people think I’m weird because of it. Since there’s no way to know if people think I’m weird or not, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to stop caring if people think I’m weird or if I’m supposed to realize people don’t care.

What if the 'catastrophic thought' isn't 'catastrophic'. For example, my main problem is that I worry that the conversation with somebody I don't know well will be awkward or uncomfortable because I won't know what to say. The reason I worry about this is because it has happened lots of times before. Therefore, during exposure therapy, it is acting as confirmation bias rather than a reality check...
@WantDemPoints
@WantDemPoints 3 ай бұрын
Don't stop that thought there and think it through to the end: what's happens if it got awkward? Is it really that awkward or do you perceive it that way? And even if it was, nothing bad will come out of it

I did some exposure and it actually was as bad as I had imagined, a little worse even. What did i learn? That my catastrophic thoughts are not catastrophic enough
@iamanegg2839
@iamanegg2839 Жыл бұрын
Maybe that isn't so bad? I think that if you get used to being in shitty social situations, you will gradually start to care less about what other people think of you. I used to be rlly scared of other people thinking that I'm boring and weird and a month ago I hung out with new people and it was soooooo bad I was really quiet and they obviously didn't like me very much. But that kind of situation happened so many times in my life so when I came back home I was just unbothered by what happened lol
@tahaa4733
@tahaa4733 11 ай бұрын
I had the same question, and only answer I was able to come up is that it is bad in my mind but others do not even care sometimes not even realize what I've been going through. So you might wanna define what is a real catastrophe

Let us say while doing exposure to real life recurring activities we get anxiety and it did not come down fully; left some effects. Should we still expose ourselves to it next day and the days after even when the anxiety has not fully subsided although you are able to do everything (it is just you get conscious that it might happen again)?
@whiterozz
@whiterozz 2 жыл бұрын
I guess the answer is there. It is a safety measure to not go
@plompennilsson2427
@plompennilsson2427 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don’t really get why you should do things that provoke anxiety and simultainesly try to reduce it by focusing outwards. Isn’t the whole point of exposure to experience loads of anxiety, not try and reduce it? Doesn’t that mean that outward focus actually is safety behaviour?
@kyokazuto
@kyokazuto 4 жыл бұрын
I think focusing outwards will not take the anxiety away completely, just make it less noticeable, and that way you will have an slightly easier time doing exposure.
@hadiazia7266
@hadiazia7266 4 жыл бұрын
I think i get what you are trying to say, why increase the anxiety only to calm it down, we do that for acceptance, we do that so we get used to being anxious, so we dont feel as tho its such a weird thing it will appear to us as natural and lastly, we'll have great control on our minds.
@oscarharvey6215
@oscarharvey6215 3 жыл бұрын
Just to put it coherently, we want to experience lots of anxiety, but we don't want to direct our attention outwards anyway. By doing this, we are accepting the anxiety exists but not allowing it to control us. The purpose of directing our attention outwards is not to reduce the feeling of anxiety.

It somewhat sounds like as a gist throughout these modules you are somewhat saying suck it up and fake it till you make it. Just go do the things you think about doing but never do. I am interested in trying these things but that one push to just go finally do it is so hard to get past. Once I do things I am very okay, but I just struggle on the part where I just need to get there and start

@Magnus Nordmo, hello doc. just a question, when I'm doing the exposure therapy, can I write down on the before exposure part of the worksheet after having done the exposure itself? I was wondering if that would play any role in the exposure therapy because I found that if I write down a before exposure before the exposure, I tend to focus more on the catastrophe thought that I'm going to make other people uncomfortable, which in turn leads me to behave in a way that makes other people uncomfortable because the thought is there, instead of actually being in the present and enjoying the moment.

But what if my biggest fear is about their thoughts and not an observable behaviour? Like they will tolerate me once, twice but wouldn’t be actually willingly spending time with me or something along those lines? Tolerated yes but actually found nice and liked?
@oscarharvey6215
@oscarharvey6215 3 жыл бұрын
Catastrophic thought: They tolerate me, but aren't actually willing to spend time with me. Exposure would involve accentuating the behaviours which you believe to be reasons that people wouldn't want to spend time with you. Then you would choose somebody new and act that way towards them. Maybe invite them out again afterwards. If they never make an effort to make plans with you/don't seem engaged with you. Practise understanding that you can never actually know whether they aren't willing to spend time with you, eg. maybe they like you but aren't the type to make plans. Of course it's possible they don't like you and if theoretically they didn't, is that as bad you initially thought? Would you want to be friends with somebody who doesn't enjoy spending time with you? You can then self evaluate on how aligned your experience was with your pre assumptions.
