thank you for this! Twi is my first language I understand everything but as a Ghanaian American and the way I get up I sadly didn't learn to speak it fluently. Your channel is helping me be more comfortable speaking Twi!

Sorry guys, there's a typo with the section on telling where you live. The English translations of all the examples start with "I'm" instead of just "I". Kafra!

It “y3fr3 me” equivalent to “we call me”? Or is it closer to “I am called”? I’m thinking in regards to understanding the general grammatical (or maybe syntactical) structure of sentences in twi

from what i have heard, i had the impression that "din" was used when stating your actual name, where "frɛ" was used when stating a nickname. i'll try to construct a sentence in twi to explain my understanding (feel free to comment on whether i got the syntax right): ne din de akwasi boadi. nanso, wɔnfrɛ no akrobeto.
@learnakan3 жыл бұрын
You’re not wrong. As you can see, the English translations for each of the 4 ways are different, I believe not just in this video, but also in the dedicated video on name telling (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnmZXp2pactqgK8). The difference in the English translations are to give you the idea that, literally, they aren’t the same. But if you are “telling your name”, as that section of the video is titled, we do use these interchangeably. Emphasis on “use”, and not what is literally right. However, if I’m telling my nickname or how people generally call me, I’m unlikely to use “me din de” because, indeed, this version is mostly used to tell your actual name. If I’m telling my nickname or how people call me, I’d definitely stick to the verb “frɛ” as you point out, and as rightly used in the section on telling your nickname.

Hello Yaw, I hope you see this comment. Someone used an idiom used in Jamaica that goes like this: "If yuh neva play wid puppy, puppy wudnt lick yuh nose..." I told the person that there is a Twi version of this. He would like to hear the Twi version, however, I don't know the exact words. I have asked Ghanaians who are much older than me, who I think should know, but they say they've never heard it before. Is it just a figment of my imagination, or am I right? If I'm right can you please tell me how it goes? Thanks!
@SirprofMagic3 жыл бұрын
What I remember goes like: Sɛ wone kraman di agorɔ a, na ɔtafere w'ano. It's when you play with a dog that it licks your mouth (not nose). It's more like "familiarity breeds contempt". Anyway there are some more idioms/proverbs on my channel though in Fante (not Twi) with English translations.
@kindomofghana3 жыл бұрын
@@SirprofMagic Thank you so much!! Can you believe no one knows what I'm talking about. I even started doubting myself at some point. I thought this was a case of false memory, lol! Anyway thank you for confirming that I am not crazy. I'll check your channel out. I am half Fante, but I can't speak it. I only speak twi and I am not as articulate as I need to be and I can't read and write as well, that's why I'm here.
