I watched your video and saw how I can remove the top cap of that area. I cleaned it out of all of the debris that was clogging it and I put it back on and my lawn mower started self-propelling on its own just because it was so dirty and clogged it had stopped working. ❤ thank you so much for your video even though I didn't have to go in the Great Lengths that your video showed.

Ok, here is some critical information, for those of us, with an electric/pull start system, and the black battery box on the deck of the mower. Ok, YES, there is a bolt underneath the box. But, it is towards the back of the mower, and you will see a slightly raised section of the box, that does not touch the deck, but sit's above it, about 1/4-3/8". The bolt you have to access is, literally in that notch, towards the backside of the black box/mower. And, I have found, that the box is riveted to the deck. So, for full access, you will have to rip the box off of the top of the deck, revealing 2 of the 3 bolts, as the 2nd bolt is, along the left side of the black battery box, just underneath the side front corner. But, if you are able to remove all of the plastic covers off of the back, including the flapper, for the bag. As, the top of the flapper for the bag hatch, is literally what has you blinded from seeing the bolt in the first place, besides the battery box itself. And, since I can't start it with the key anymore(Long story short, the cable harness was ripped out of the key starter switch, and ruined it), so it's pretty useless to me, at the moment. So, I decided to just rip the black box itself off. Which, made it much more simpler to access all 3 bolt's, for the plastic belt guard underneath. Also, it is a good idea to take a plastic bag(Walmart bags will do fine), and use it underneath the gas cap, by taking the cap off, then draping the bag(Double layer, by using whole bag) over the open hole, then screw the cap back on, and you now have a sealed gas cap, from leaking...

How would I know if it's a cable issue? I took the machine apart and the belt looks fine. Mower is only about 3 years old and only used on my house, not commercial use. Just isn't self propelling. Good video, btw.
@JLPicard4407 ай бұрын
You can physically turn the transmission to see if the wheels engage (obviously with the mower off!)... I don't remember if this one has a lever on the transmission or not to engage it, I'd have to go back through the video to see if I see that. Some do, some just engage when the transmission is pulled back by the cable. If the transmission is working fine, then it has to be either the cable or the belt..

@JLPicard4403 ай бұрын
OOH! So either the transmission is not transferring power to the wheels or it might be broken. Don't try this with the engine running! weight down the handle so it stays on the ground and the mower is up in the air. REMOVE the spark plug wire from the spark plug and move it away from the spark plug (and make sure it stays away). Then put a clamp (or tie a string) on both handles to squeeze them into the self propelled position so you can spin the blade by hand. See what's turning... if the axle shaft is turning then the engine then your transmission is fine and it's in the wheels.

Great explanation! I switched my cable out but it doesn’t engage when I push the pace bar forward…but when I pull all the way back on the pace bar it goes forward?!? Any ideas?
@JLPicard4405 ай бұрын
It sounds like the cable is pulling in the wrong direction. If you know how to properly turn the mower on it's side (so you don't get oil in the muffler (carburetor up and piston at TDC on compression stroke)) so you can see what's going on, push the pace bar forward and see if the cable is loose... If so, it's probably in the wrong hole somewhere down the line. Meaning it's pushing instead of pulling. I'm just guessing though.
@ryan63912 ай бұрын
@@JLPicard440 I ended up with that same result and noticed I connected the top of the cable to the metal bar that shuts off the mower. The metal bar has a hole on both sides of the handle so I automatically thought it went there when it goes on the plastic piece under the handle bar like he shows in the video.

Now mines will engage when I squeeze my handles belt spinning and everything but my tires not moving, what would cause this problem?
@JLPicard440Ай бұрын
HI... if you flip the mower on it's side (Muffler side down/ piston at top dead center) and remove the spark plug... Can you squeeze the handle and see the cable pulling the transmission and tightening the belt? Ive seen some mowers get clogged up with grass so the transmission won't engage... Also take a look at the axle shafts while you're turning the engine by hand... are they turning? It'll only be a little bit... If the engine is turning and the transmission is engaged, but the axles aren't turning, then you might have a transmission problem... I wouldn't go there just yet though.

@JLPicard4402 ай бұрын

@bradbarthold12782 ай бұрын
@JLPicard440 on my mower there is a knob on the left hand side that adjusts the self propel cable. I'm thinking that also adjusts the tension on the belt because the cable connects to the spring on the pulley system

Mine has, new cable, gears, tires, and belt. Spins tires with it off the ground but doesn’t do anything once they touch the ground. No one I talk to seems to know why.
@JLPicard4405 ай бұрын
HI! I would disconnect the belt and manually turn the transmission pulley by hand with the wheels on the ground. See if you feel slippage inside the transmission. It's difficult to diagnose something like that without being able to see it.. Some mowers have a lever where the cable engages to actually engage the transmission. IF yours does, then make sure that lever is engaged when you do the test.
@marknye51.thefixitguy9 ай бұрын
Still not moving. Cable moves the transmission and has new belt, but still won't move
@JLPicard4409 ай бұрын
So if the cable is engaging the lever on the transmission, there could be a problem either at the wheel being stripped or the transmission itself. Take off the wheels and see if the small gear that engages with the wheels is turning.
