Understanding Self-Remembering and Self-Observation in Gurdjieff's Work
Martin Butler delves into the principles of self-remembering within the context of Gurdjieff's teachings. Often misunderstood as a simplistic concept, self-remembering is essential yet not sufficient for personal growth. Martin explains that our attention is typically consumed by the formatory mind-filled with daydreams, inner dialogues, and reflections-hindering our ability to engage with the present moment.
To practice self-remembering, Martin suggests directing attention to parts of the body, breaking free from the habitual grip of the formatory mind. However, he emphasizes that true transformation requires addressing deeper emotional and psychological conditioning. This involves a process he calls "factualization," where one writes down and acknowledges internal states and anxieties without judgment.
Self-remembering is only part of the journey; combining it with self-observation, where we impartially note our thoughts and feelings, is crucial. Through sincere and honest self-reflection, we can gradually quiet the persistent inner voices, making sustained self-remembering more achievable.
