I will try it this summer ! The summer 2022 i jabd steared sometimes up to 14 hours , i am getting to old for it. I have gad many autopilots for a tilöer steering but off course sold them when buying a boat with syeering wheel. Now i am back on tiller steering again and love it !

Never had a problem upwind , just an occy strap (Australia) roof rack strap right across with one loop on the tiller in a constant wind and Bobs your Aunty (better be inclusive)... But down wind I'd have to say yours is the best and simplest... Thanks and all the best...

I could see the down wind setting become more even if you put the rolling hitch lower to the deck so the jib luffing didn't make it move so much.

I never have a sailboat and little confused. Here is my: If the wind getting stronger from the starboard, the boat turns away to the port, and it needs the physical rudder turns to the starboard to steer it straight, therefore the tiller should move to the port side (the rudder and tiller move the opposite) . Do I miss a big here? Thank you to show this simple system.

A sailboat is usually set up with weather helm. So the boat will turn up into the wind.

Tillers do steer opposite unlike a wheel.

I do my downwind rig just a little different, but I’ll have to try your method. Do you backwind the jib slightly? Also, probably 15 kts for this setup?

I think it was 12-15 kts that day. There are so many ways of doing this. Every boat is a little different. I have an old out of print book I learned this from years ago written by a guy that sailed to Hawaii and developed his techniques along the way. I will be making more videos soon with other techniques and variations. If you have two jibs you can run downwind by wrapping each jib sheet to the tiller without any elastic. The tail block is used if you have a jib too small to respond. A genoa doesn't usually require a tail block. Do I back the jib? No, but sometimes downwind, if the jib backs it keeps a course. But it's probably not the course I set up. Thanks for watching.

Yes. If you tack you must change sides.

It maintains speed and course as long as the wind stays the same. When the wind eases in same direction, it still maintains course. This is the best self-steering that only works with a tiller. Wind vanes break and leave you waiting for parts, electronic systems run your battery dead and break, jam and will turn your boat off course in the presence of large steel structures like bridges. This however, is a skill that you must learn and hone. I use sheet-to-tiller all the time. It steers better than I do. Most people give up because it seems complicated. I got sick and tired of taking apart those raytheon tiller pilots trying to fix them. I read an old book and learned how to do it from a fella that sailed to Hawaii in the fifties. Sheet-to-tiller is a sailor skill that is a balancing act. Most all of my videos on this channel have some sheet-to-tiller examples. Thanks for watching!
