Years ago when my grandfather died, we all flew in from wherever in the world we were to mourn and help my mother through it. My sister could only take a couple days off work. She decided she needed more time, and so called her boss, who told her she would have to resign and re-apply for her job when she came back. Bosses suck. Do not give more than the minimum requirement to them, and never, ever expect loyalty in return.

Nothing truer about this. When I was younger I poured my heart and soul into my job, because I fell for the corporate posters that encouraged a caring environment and being your "best self". I cared so much about my boss that I was willing to give them financial support when they were experiencing hardship with medical issues in their family. Eventually this boss showed his real face and came to treat me as a small person he could push around, to the point it escalated into workplace harassment. Do not give a fuck about your boss, even when they say they care about you.
