As a builder for 40 years..advice. Never rely on adhesive on a peak,run flashing under ridge vent over top of boot. It WILL leak if not.If you flash it ,it will last the life of the rubber boot. Great work on the cabin.
@50Acres5 жыл бұрын
Thank you that is what I was thinking as well, I have to go back up there to add some more chimney anyways, might as well.
@cabinman5 жыл бұрын
I was going to say the same thing. The best insurance especially since you're only a few inches from the ridge. Those boots are good and the lines around there are to trim it to the diameter needed.

Why install the pipe up inside the cabin, all that way up through the roof ? Was there no way place to install the stove near an exterior wall, with the flue pipe going out through a side wall, then up the outside of the cabin ?

@@boxwoodgreen Never run a flue through a wall,Future leak,rolls down pipe and will rot wall.Not to mention you can't clean it and 2 90* elbows slow suction up.

I have had a chimney boot like that on my camp for about 6 years. Instead of pushing the boot down, and having that pucker, I was able to keep the boot higher on top, making a dome shape. Then I sealed around the top also. If you use the metal chimney boot, just run a short piece of flashing up under the ridge cap, then it shouldn’t leak. Great job!
@50Acres4 жыл бұрын
Yea I tried to do that, due to the pitch of my roof I wasn't able. It seems to be working pretty well.

I made the same mistake and put the crimp facing up and I had creosote leaking on the outside of my stovepipe! I learned my lesson the hard way! I used the telescoping pipe in my installation too. I also used the high temp silicone boot on the roof and had no problems over the past 2 years. All the best. - Dave
@50Acres4 жыл бұрын
Yea I managed to get it right eventually, there was a sticker on the pipe telling me which way to face up! I have heard from about 20 people all saying their boot is working fine so that is comforting.

Thanks to your sponsor. Good work as always. A little trick to get on that roof easier. Lash a 4x4 to the end of that folding extendable ladder. Tie a long piece of rope to the 4x4. Push the ladder with the 4x4 up over the ridgecap so it catches. The 4x4 will act like a hook. Just go easy and you wont damage anything. If you sre worried about it, tape some foam to the 4x4 where it is going to contact. For safety toss the rope over the roof and attach to something solid. With the full length of the ladder on one side you should be able to walk up it instead of struggling with that first six feet.

YAY! You have an actual tea kettle! It's a WISE man to to be wary that far up in the air without a safety net, but it IS a beautiful view. Goetta: Ingredients 1 lb Ground Pork 1 lb Ground Beef 8 cups Water 2-1/2 cups Steel Cut Oats or Organic Steel Cut Oats 1 pinch Ground Pepper 2 tsp Salt 1 to 4 Bay Leaves * 1 Onion large-sized, sliced* Instructions In a large pot with a lid, boil the water. Add salt, pepper and oatmeal. Cover and let cook for two hours, stirring often. Add the meat, onion and bay leaves, mix well. Cook for another hour, stirring often. Remove bay leaf (leaves). Pour into bread pans- size of pan does not matter. Refrigerate overnight. To serve: Slice the goetta and fry it until crispy or just until heated through. Goetta may be served with pancakes and eggs, on sandwiches, or in place of meat at dinner. Makes about 24 servings.

having the right length roof ladder and safety gear a must for dangerous roof work
@joharmon21485 жыл бұрын
I was wondering why you waited so long to put your safety glasses on! But nice job and nice of Jay to help out. Roof stuff makes me nervous. Enjoy the fires warmth.

Thanks Jo, it was just stubbornness and not wanting to come down the ladder, it was great to have Jay helping.

I would be willing to try that install myself.......😳 except for the outside roof part! I’ll call you for that part 😏 I have learned over the years to always do and outside pre-install burn.....before moving the stove inside👍🤠 nice camera work too! Thanks for the video, excellent 👏

Thank you glad you liked it. When we did the break in burns we fired up the kitchen exhaust fan and it wasn't too bad.

"I can just imagine the comments I get when I use this [holds up a machete to hack his way thru the rest of the roof]". Lolol....gonna get all medieval jungle on it! He knew how rediculous it would look but tried it anyway. You pass the 'typical guy' test dude..I got a good chuckle out of it. Hey man you did a nice job on your stove and pipe ✔. Thanx for the video.

Great video. I’d be apprehensive about cutting into the roof as well. Now I know that thru-wall is not recommended (yet still available), but I was thinking if you can build a insulated fireproof chimney box and then go thru-wall. Might give close to the best of both worlds. Alternatively, and of course too late for you, a addition designed for the woodstove. That way your main cabin roof stays intact and the addition might be easier to fix. Just thoughts and ideas.

Thanks Phillip, yea those could have been some good alternatives. Possibly a good idea for anyone in the planning stage.
