Here in Mississippi we get $30 a ton for pine logs 16’6” length with 12” top minimum, and hard wood pulp wood 3” top minimum tree length is $28 a ton , so we bought a saw mill and cut lumber up out of the logs we get or chip it , make more money that way

I'd like to see some videos on inspecting used equipment. Like if I wanna buy an old grinder, chipper, skid steer etc. What do we look for to make sure it's gonna be a reliable machine? I'd also love a video on advertising and picking up work as a new outfit. I read your book but that topic can't be covered too much. Thanks bro!

Another excellent video -- thanks for sharing your knowledge and insights. You mentioned that one of the videos you expect to do soon will be about what groundies are expected to do and how you manage and train them to make them more productive. It would be interesting if you could say a bit in that video or a separate one regarding what you do to find and keep good groundies. Everyone always defaults to "pay them better" and there's no doubt that paying a reasonable wage is a big part of it, but there undoubtedly much more to it than just the pay rate. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I know it's gotta be tough to think about recording and editing videos when you're working hard all day in the heat.

Depending on the area you are in and the species of tree you bring to the mill makes a big difference on what the mill is willing to pay. The mill also deducts for various conditions of the logs brought in, some logs they won't even pay for them if they have no value. North Carolina has no shortage of trees, so they pay less for them.

Before getting these numbers I thought those tree service guys were getting 30-300 per log they take off my property depending on size. Now that I see you made less than 2 fitty for 12+ huge trees I feel dumbstruck. Thank you for showing the customers that there ain’t that much money growing on trees.

Unless it's a very sought after grade of lumber, most big mills won't even touch "yard trees". They just assume they're full of metal. People nail all sorts of things to trees and a piece of metal will ruin a saw blade real quick. Between replacing/repairing the blade you've also got lost time while that machine is down. For a production mill it isn't worth the risk. Most tree services, especially if they aren't near a local mill, have to pay dump fees at the landfill or have a buddy with a big piece of land they can burn on.

It varies with type of wood and condition of wood, if it is sold to make guitars, violins, pianos, furniture, tool handles and baseball bats, is worth more than wood for burning. Have no idea what logs sell for near here.

You have some nice equipment many years ago I used to work with a guy taking down tree's, you should have seen the junk we had. Couple homemade triaxle,trailers,that we would haul short wood 5feet long, tools and saws on a old rescue squad truck 😂, had a vintage lineman truck with winch and boom in back, to lift large logs or stand tree's up after hurricanes, no brakes, I had to tow line truck to job with my 84 square body truck. When we used it, a ancient clapped out bucket truck. We looked like the Beverly hillbillies coming through town. Those were the days. SC here.

Prices in central Georgia are $36 per ton for pine sawtimber and the same for hardwoods. Cutting the logs up and drying does carry and expense, but small scale logging seems hardly economical anymore.

Well, I'm not a tree service. I'm not licensed, I sure don't have that kind of insurance, I don't have a bucket truck, climbing gear, rigging, a loader... It's just me and a chainsaw. There's a reason the tree service is quoting $4k!

The only mill in my area (that isn't a guy in his backyard with a portable sawmill) only buys by weight. Unless you've got some rare specialty logs come through, their whole goal is to get the logs in and pump the lumber out. Time is money, so have the trucks drive over the scales at the gate instead of paying somebody to stand out there trying to measure every log in a load.

If you bought a portable saw mill and had one or maybe two people you can make a lot more, plus you can sell every bit of the trees, and I mean all, even the saw dust can be sold , you can make off 106 board foot $265 for one hour plus the by products you can make $300 or more, per hour maybe more if you have a fast guy and saw.

If I do not run a log on my own mill, I process it all into firewood. Around here we get $75 per face cord. It takes a few logs per face cord. But putting that to weight - a face cord weighs roughly 1200 to 1500 lbs. I get about 2 - 3x what you are getting but then again it takes a lot of work to process it all.

Being you are a tree service you got paid to remove the trees yes? Basically you don’t have to pay to dump and probably covers some of your fuel. The problem is people saw lumber prices and forgot about all the activity that goes into creating that 2x4 or sheet of OSB. Not to mention loggers saw very little in the way of getting paid more for their logs. Pine pulp in western MN is currently $35-40 per ton ($110-120 per cord). Hardwoods are $120-$140 per cord for firewood/pulp. Bolts are +-$165/cord and grade logs are well over $200 per cord. Interesting to see what different areas pay!

Thank you for sharing your insights on the costs and considerations involved in the lumber industry. You are correct that as a tree service company, we are paid to remove trees and may not have to pay to dispose of them, but it is important to note that there are still costs associated with the equipment, labor, and transportation required to remove and dispose of trees. Additionally, the fluctuations in lumber prices are influenced by various factors such as supply and demand, production costs, and market trends. We appreciate your perspective on the current pricing for pine pulp and hardwoods in western MN and how it compares to other types of logs and grades in different areas. Thank you for engaging with our content and sharing your knowledge on this topic.

even if logs don't pay anything I would much rather take them to the mill instead of turning em into fire wood or chipping em anyway just because I'd rather the tree get turned into something useful vs sit at the county till they disintegrate. I'd rather the tree someones paying me to cut down anyway go into the lumber market vs seeing another perfectly good tree get cut down to fill supply demand I coulda filled with my logs. the stuff I get ain't nothing compared to the logs them big lumber operations get but everything helps I guess.
@KennysTreeRemoval

I agree, now when you’re running a business what’s more profitable is your first option, follow about efficiency and recycle. If we can’t sell the logs we either give them away or take them to landfill and they will process them for mulch to the consumer to use around their gardeing beds etc.
