That’s why I always wait a year or so before I invest in a set to see how good they actually are. Research how many people are opening those sets on rip n ships longer term once initial hype has calmed down, what are the hit rates, the value of cards, the age of a set is an important factor too. I’ve only heavily invested in evolving skies, fusion, chilling, lost origin. A fair amount in CZ and 151 too, People’s arguments are you can preorder and save £15 a box… when boxes are £1000+ each who cares about £15 a box savings? You’ve lost way more by buying bad sets which have had way less growth. Not only that typically when buying a brand new set you’re waiting 18 months or so before stock starts to dry up and prices increase over msrp. That’s dead money when you could’ve purchased a good set that’s almost gone out of print and starting to increase. Now is a fantastic time to start stocking up on crown zenith, 151 at retail on reprints, if you’re in the UK then sleeved/blister packs of fusion strike, brilliant star boxes at retail. These are going to be double the price within a year, something like twilight? Most likely still at msrp or a 10% gain compared to 100% gain and in my opinion not as good sets as CZ, 151, FS, BS. Maybe people will disagree but my strategy has been making huge profits and I’ve only been investing for 2 years (properly 18 months ago). In the last 2 weeks alone my portfolio has increased by just over £4500. Over the 2 years probably 40k or so. I don’t want to be big headed or act like a professional because I’m not but I see such obvious plays and a lot of people just buy less desirable sets way too early on. A bit too sheepish behaviour. SS went mad because all the channels were hyping it up before all the cards were even released. Look at how vivid worked out long term after initial hype. Sure SS is a better set but I don’t believe the prices will remain high. We can still buy it for msrp in the UK anyway. It’s not worth my time to buy a set for £110 and sell for £140. I’m in for the long haul. We’re investors not collectors, don’t worry about buying something of every set. Put all your funds in the best set(s) instead even if it means you own 10 or 100 of the same set. While most people were picking up modern mediocre S&V sets I was going ham buying 150+ fusion strike boxes, a bunch of Zard UPCs at around £90, lost origin blisters below msrp. Aside from 151 S&V has been a bit poor IMO. SWSH is going to perform extremely well long term compared to other eras. It’s the last of the yellow boarders, last set to include Ash, the era of rip n shippers bringing so many new faces into Pokemon, to those people SWSH will be considered the original sets to some extent. C19 and Logan Paul also bought in a bunch of new faces during SWSH. It’s an extremely nostalgic and memorable generation. 20 years time kids today will be wanting to relive those memories and most likely will want to open SWSH over S&M or S&V. Maybe I’m wrong and S&V will outperform SWSH. Nobody really knows. I guess what I’m trying to say is look outside the box and don’t rush in too early. Some early S&V sets are now at the stage where you might want to consider investing. I’m just not blown away by base or Paldea evolved and will instead be investing in Fusion whilst I still can at msrp. Consider investments like fine wine, the older the more rarer and desirable they are

Maybe I came across a bit rude to everyone but I totally agree with you, don’t be afraid to sell less desirable products to buy something more better. If I was in different shoes and had a bunch of stellar crown I’d be selling it and buying fusion boxes even at £190ish. By the time fusion is £1000 a box stellar is likely going to be a £350-400 box at a push.

I 100% agree, I buy after the hype is gone to see how the community feels about the set, for example chilling reign and fusion strike people didn't love when it first came out but I think the community is looking more favorably on it now. I personally invested in team up, cosmic eclipse, evolving skies, and 151 because I think those are the performers but it's never a bad idea to wait for the hype to die down

I like to sell when i can make 100% my profit or unless I think what i have is not performing and I just want to get out of the product, I have a lot of dragonball super product that just isn't performing now but it's so low I figure I might keep and see if it rebounds

I dont want to be rude but people buying into pokemon for "investing" are really dumb when it comes to selling product. They dont grow a selling platform like ebay, tcgplayer, ect. wont research going to card shops or card shows to sell in person. Like whats the point in having the mindset of holding onto product that can potentially hit thousands and want to sell it early cause your afraid
