Nice video. Am thinking of getting a Yamaha or Selmer. I saw a used Selmer sas711 for a good price, so I have been trying to research that model. This video is definitely helpful as Selmer seems to be more budget friendly than Yamaha.

I picked up a nib old stock as42 recently, unplayed, auction, only because it was so inexpensive, and that factory patina is impressive, and I figured how bad can it be. I've been playing it a lot with a tuner in front of me in order to pick up on the intonation idiosyncrasies and adapt. While listening to you play with the tuner next to the speaker, I see all the same culprits, to a lesser degree. The palm key notes on the as42 fly off the handle for me, which is where I'm focusing my long tones right now. I've only ever been impressed by intonation on a old buffet alto, a yamaha alto and my yanagisawa soprano. Most of what I try at the store these days just isn't something that will part me with 3500 bucks, except that sw01...they got my money on that one!

If I had the money, I would want to compare this with the Selmer Paris Axos Seles, ie, price difference, build quality differences, etc. My concern with Selmer Paris is that they use a water based lacquer. I disagree with them that it makes a difference in the sound without. Then the neck with the 711, I have seen used examples where the finish was great on the body, but the neck was almost bare brass. I read that with the Seles, they use a thicker coat of lacquer, that is oil based. The other question that I can't seem to find an answer to, is what is the expected lifespan of a Taiwanese horn? Nobody has been able to provide an answer. Do they stay in regulation like the Selmer Paris, and how about maintenance visits, compared to the Selmer Paris.

Sounds great Dave. What mouthpiece and reed? It sounds really even timbre and intonation wise.

Thanks Bob! This was on a Meyer 7 with a Vandoren V16 3 reed. I think the V16 pushes the sound a little brighter...normally I use a LaVoz medium-hard, which I'm guessing would have beefed it up a bit, but this setup would be good if I needed to cut a little more. Thanks again!

I can't find this sax anywhere! I've looked on Selmer's site and various dealer sites; none of them mention the SAS-711 Has it not been released publicly yet?

We haven't gotten one in yet (aside from the one to try, which we had to send back), but I believe they are coming soon!

I think its the AS42B right? Or is the name different??
@schmittmusicsaxophoneshop44513 жыл бұрын
@@itstoasty7089That was the name, but they are changing their model names going forward to be a little easier to sort through.

@@schmittmusicsaxophoneshop4451 There was also a change in ‘ranking’. If I remember correctly from what my store clerk said, the instrument was lowered to an entry level professional instrument. I really don’t see a difference because it sounds professional enough to me.

The top really sounded great. You are a very good player. It is hard for me to be critical on a comment so please don't take this as me saying that the horn is bad or you are bad. I thought that the low end was a bit thin maybe it was just the style of your playing; jazz as oppose to classical. You played this like a pro, I wonder what it would sound like in a middle schooler's/intermediate player's hands. What would the kid say about it? Give a few kids (or intermediate skilled players) a few types horns and see what they have to say about the feel, weight, stretch of fingers and the ability to play with a number 2 reed on the stock mouthpiece (can they reach the palm keys?). I play a super action 80 series ii, I play it for family and church. Blessings partner, keep the videos coming.

It does sound a little bright on the recording...I think you're right about that. I was using a little brighter reed (V16) than I usually use, so that might be part of it, but I agree with you, I noticed it was a little brighter than I thought when I was editing the video. Thanks for the feedback!
