Selomoh Ayllion was a divisive figure in the early modern Sephardic community. He was born in Salonica, and lived in the Land of Israel before moving to London where he was appointed Haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews. Accused of being a secret follower of the false messiah Sabbatai Tsvi, Ayllion moved to Amsterdam where he served as Haham and head of the prestigious Ets Haim seminary. Ton Tielen will share new research on Ayllion’s fascinating and disputatious life.
Ton Tielen is well-known in the world of Sephardic genealogy. He co-founded this series of meetings, the Sephardic Genealogical Society, and The Sephardic Diaspora group on Facebook. He formerly served as archivist of the Netherlands Red Cross.
