Great scene from the series Taxi (episode: "Jim's Mario's"; original airdate: May 18, 1983), where Jim (Christopher Lloyd) shows the NY Liquor Authority he's "a man to be reckoned with." With Bayonne NJ's own Walter Olkewicz as Tom and the late William Hootkins (who played Jek Tono Porkins in Star Wars) as the liquor authority agent.

First time I saw this my heart sank until the reveal of seltzer. Awesome! I'm also loving all the Doc Brown references in the comments. As many roles as this man has played you never hear about Judge Doom or Fester Addams, just the Doc 😆

How about Taber in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?" That role was a bit tough seeing him in. This here seltzer scene from Jim's Mario's Place may have been the show's last good one. Can't remember how many episodes were left in series. They had a nice run though!

I know someone who got busted like this, only more sinister. Young looking guy of legal age came in all the time buying liquor and chatting it up. One day he came in, said he forgot his driver's license. My friend said, it's OK, I know you, sold him the liquor. The guy pulled out his badge - he was a young cop. Huge fine though he didn't lose his license.

@@serfcityherewecome8069 Oh, I see, sorry, I hadn't read the OP in a couple years. I was presenting it from his viewpoint. Legal age because of the license, but turns out it was a police created ID with a fake age on it. They couldn't bust him for not discovering the perfect ID was fake, but they could bust him for not demanding ID from someone who looked, and was, under 21. I expect these days you could successfully sue and win that case, but in those days as a minority, probably not.

Great episode. I would think that since Jim told him it was against the law and that he couldn't do it because if he got one more violation they'd shut his place down that would be entrapment. Of course with a slimeball like that good luck proving it.

They pull this kind of shit because it takes money to fight it in court and the smaller you are, the less likely you have the pockets to fight it. Besides, even if you do win, years down the road, it isn't like you are gaining money out of the government parasite's pocket. The taxpayer foots that bill.

But why bother entrapping people, and making them unemployed, when if they're running a business, it's more profitable for the government? Unless the government are in the pockets of someone who has something to gain from businesses going bust, but who would gain apart from banks and rival companies...?
