Excellent as always. One quibble: the two meanings of "bank" are polysemy. The central metaphor is an embankment, a horizontal transverse barrier. It can be a wall on the shore of a river or a counter in a financial institution.

OK. The distinction amongst syntactic, semantic, and pragmatics, so fundamental to modern lingustics, was formulated by Morris in 1938 in a semiotic context. Something went wrong, and it was probably Chomsky. Rather than a rough idea of how to approach the study of language, the three aspects were taken to be distinct features of language, an error akin to arguing whether atomic behavior _is_ physics _or_ chemistry. My view is that to a zeroth approximation everything comes from pragmatics. Consider the deictic locative "there's Daddy." Nobody has succeeded in driving it from the simple "Daddy is there" by transformational means. It is considered so complex Chomsky ignored it. Yet it is the first sentence in English most children learn. The mother points and says, "there's Daddy!" The child says, "da Dada." The grammar is perfect, following pragmatics without much semantics at all.

Semantics deal with meaning in general while pragmatics deal with meaning in specific with intention of the speaker and the place where the words had been uttered
