I have done exactly the same, turned up at a station and bought a ticket on the next train to a random destination, only rule is to ensure I do not arrive after dark. That said I do have the advantage of knowing Bahasa Indonesia. I am aways humbled by the hospitality of the locals

@@olderbackpacker Actually, it is called Venetie van Java, because it was lined with Canals due to the location on a swampy coastal of North Java.

The tourist like usually start from Jakarta to bandung to jogjakarta and straight onto malang to Bali it is the south route ..while Semarang is on north of java..

Hello, I'm glad you visited Semarang City. Semarang is the fifth largest metropolitan city in Indonesia. Semarang have many "hidden gem" places there. If you are currently in Semarang City, try to visit "Gedongsongo temple". It is located in a high hill area in Semarang and is a historical heritage that should not be missed. The natural scenery is also very beautiful.

Glad that you visited the Capital of the Central Java. If you want to go for culinary tours, go to Warung Semawis in the Chinatown. Warung Semawis only opened for pedestrian at weekend nights, so better prepare the next time you visit. Don't forget to visit Sam Po Kong Temples too, a Temple dedicated to Cheng Hoo, the Chinese Moslem trader.

Thank you for your comment. It was random that I came to the city as I wasn’t going there. The train office in Yogyakarta recommended it to me and I decided to randomly go there. I think there is a loss of translation with my title and I’m so glad that I went with the random choice :)

For someone who's not from Indonesia, Semarang is indeed just a random city in Indonesia, so what's the problem? Even for Indonesian who lived outside Java (and don't really know geography) they might never even heard of Semarang before.

Well, for foreign tourists Semarang is not a well-known destination, of course it's random lol. Even for local people, we're prefer to go to Jogja, Solo, Magelang. Let be honest, Central Java tourism is underdeveloped, we don't even have an international airport lol.
