Regardless of what happened i I think he should withdraw the case. If it was me i will deal with it without involving the police or any other person. Taking his mother to police then court seeing his being jail. I will never ever do that to my biological mother. Mick, should be careful with this case. If he don't any witness when he was giving the money to his mum, i don't think he stand a chance the lawyers will just eat his money for nothing. Before taking his mother to police then to court, he must have concrete evidence.
