D'Angelico is such a great brand! And they make great guitars nowdays, especially solid bodies. Unfortunetly there is limited material about it here on youtube. Darrell, maybe you could do anoter comparison between D'Angelico Premier and Epiphone or just between Premier and Deluxe series?

Thanks for your work on this video good job well done. Because of another video you did I ordered a D'Angelico Hollowbody with P90's can't wait to get it. I think in your video the D'Angelico had a warmer tone which I liked more. I used to have a Epi 335 Dot at one time and I never really bonded to it so I got rid of it. I like the Gibson (Epiphone) for sound and looks and construction and materials, but I do not like BB King's choices, especially that selector knob, or the fine tuner bridge. A friend was playing a big show with BB King, and he was trying to show BB King how the song went, and so he starting calling out the chords, and BB said, "BB KING DON'T DO NO CHORDS!!!"

Musician’s Friend has the D’Angelico Premier SS (normally $699.99 I think) in black for $399 as their Stupid Deal of the Day today (2019-6-2). Hey Darrell was needing some experienced knowledge if you don't mind. I bought, 2-3 yrs ago, a D'Angelico DLX-SS from a popular Web site for 60% off. At the time I didn't have a "Jazz" guitar (only a solid body) and wanted one but didn't want to spend a lot. I'm taking Jazz guitar lessons, which I do like, but am in NO way an accomplished jazz guitar player. I knew D'Angelico made incredible guitars, 60% off kept it around the > $600 area and I thought hey that's a no-brainer and bought it on a whim. I can't find reviews on the DLX-SS (could it be the same one here?) and was wondering, was this a decent purchase ? I know one complaint was it's "loud" shiny gold pickups, bridge, tuners etc. from a blog. The color doesn't bother me at all since I wouldn't dare attempt to play in public. I know well known/established guitar manufacturers have, throughout the years, come out with inferior products cashing in on their name...is this one of those instances ? Don't spare feelings I just need an honest opinion. It would be MOST appreciated.

I wonder would it be worth moving that guitar to the Opti-Pick guitar pickups and install the associated electronics into the cavity to give a boosted output via a multi-way cable so the guitar can be powered by a suitably modded guitar amp and also have the ability to drive a keyboard synthesizer via a MIDI socket on the side of the suitably modded guitar amp that powers the guitar you will know what I mean just leave the strings stock but will give a choice of steel or catgut strings.

I recently added an Epiphone ES-335 to my small collection. I purchased a slightly used Joe Bonamasa model and I have to say this is one awesome guitar from Epiphone. The Alnico II and Alnico III pickups sound amazing and along with the ebony fret board it’s a blues machine IMO. I did remove the Bigsby and added a tail piece instead.

Thanks so much for making this video. I had an Epiphone endorsement locally in Brisbane Australia from 2001 to 2017 and still own around 35 Epiphones, all 335 derivatives. Just to be on the safe side I fitted them all with Gibson pickups, although to be fair, in many of them the standard Epiphone pickups sounded quite good, especially the Jorma Kaukonen Rivieras and the Lucille I've had for years. Still swapped them out eventually. I've seen the D'Angelico guitars on Ebay, but had no idea how they compared size-wise and on playability, so I'm glad you did your side by side comparison. I dunno, for some reason they appear smaller when viewed by themselves. I'm glad to see that they're full-size 335-style guitars. Would you say the neck on the D'Angelico is much the same size as the Lucille neck? I've got huge hands for a short guy and the big neck on the Lucille suits me down to the ground. I just picked up a second hand but as new Epiphone ES-355 Shinichi Ubukata Signature model this week and its neck is even fatter than on my Lucille. I bonded with it on the first play!!

The feedback you were getting on the BB King was microphonic, and had nothing to do with the body design. That was all from the pickups themselves. You must've had the amp cranked up a good bit. Resonant feedback is way more pleasing than microphonic, don't you think?

I actually love Epiphone, but I'm not a fan of the Lucille. I think it's the look, plus the missing f-holes. I'm also not a huge Black & Gold fan. Don't really know why, it just doesn't really do it for me. Seems a little ostentatious... If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the D'Angelico, but still think I'd prefer another Epiphone. One man's mud is another man's warmth. I find the D'Ang. a little lacking in warmth, but it totally depends on what you're going for. Like Darrell says: if it's too bright you can always roll off the passive tone; but to add missing body & warmth you'll have to reach for EQ further down your signal chain.

So I put a Dimarzio PAF in the bridge and a Dimarzio Area 61 in the neck. It really brought the guitar to life. My Gibson LP and ESP Horizon Custom are jealous (Ive heard them talking in the night....). The D'Angelico cost 1/3 of either of the other ones and plays just as good!

You can buy a D'Angelico Premiere and switch out the pickups to Seymour Duncan USA Made either The Seth Lovers or 59 or Duncan Jazz pickups and have a super guitar! I'd even maybe use the Seth Lover Duncan in the Neck and The Jazz in the Bridge as it is not a piercingly bright! That would cost you about $239.00 but still keep you below their price of the Excel or Deluxe Series..

Darrell, you missed the point of the tailpiece. It's a FINE TUNING tailpiece. It's more precise than the headstock tuners. I put one on my Turbocaster prototype TJM Deluxe (Jazzmaster style), and have found, after about 10 shows and 20 rehearsals, plus regular practice, that although it takes a little to remember to use it, it really makes keeping in tune easier. I now put them on all my TJM Deluxe models unless a trem is specifically requested. It's not something one immediately uses, but after getting used to it being available, it's REALLY neat-o to have!!

So let's say a person buys either guitar and they want to upgrade the pups, which one is easier to do so on? The Epiphone with it's rear access plate!! You forgot to mention that and that is a big deal considering with D'Angelico you will have to fish everything through those F holes. About the feedback, If you take a semi hollow body and set it at about 7 or above you will have more feedback than on say a Les Paul if it has the F holes, it's not saying, as you showed, you won't have NO feedback. I get feedback on my Les Paul's if I have the cranked up and I am close to my amps lol. I think the veritone switch offers you 4 more different tones than one without so for me I would buy the Epiphone because of the rear access panel, the veritone switch and that black looks sweet!! I do love the vintage looks of the D'Angelico though!! That bridge is so cool looking and yes, the F holes make it look better. But I did think the color the D'Angelico was a bit dull looking. For full disclosure though - on my Zzounds account wish list I do have that BB King model in there and it's been in there for about a year now lol.

I talked to Milton Hopkins ( B.B.'s rhythm guitarist) in the 1970's after a B.B. King concert, he told me that he used electrical tape over the F-holes that he first traced the outline with pencil then put it on a piece of mirror and cut it out with a razor blade. So Gibson finally caught up with B.B. and Milton.

Could you please say where the guitars are manufactured on your videos. No big deal but I’d rather not buy a guitar made in China and it’s pretty confusing trying to find out online which models are made where. Apart from that love your videos, keep them coming.

I would choose a D'Angelico for a semi-hollow guitar. Much better features than the Epiphone and you don't have to scrounge around for a case.

Fine Tuners are there because when you play a gig with only one guitar and you bend a lot of strings, you can much more easily reach a fine tuner on the fly than you can at the headstock. Just imagine you’ve got one guitar and you are playing the whole night for three sets. No tech, no roadie. Just a gigging man who needs to keep the music playing so the drinks keep getting bought.

If you would have done your research on the epiphone there are coil splits. They are in position 5 and 6. BUY this guitar . This guy did not even tap into what makes this guitar a beast. This is the only model epiphone ive played that hit way above its price point. Four chords and the truth im out.

I just got a 2019 Gibson es335 studio with classic 57s. Price is $1999. Been playing for 30 years, owned multiple guitars and have to say it sounds amazing and worth the $2k imho. My favorite axe atm.

@@javierrodriguez4707the biggest difference is probably just the amount of feedback (but im not sure by how much) But other than that im sure the tone would be probably similar for the most part

I would recommend two other Epiphone models to someone shopping in this category: The Sheraton II Pro has the ProBucker pickups, and the ES-335 Pro has the Alnico Classic Pro pickups. Both sets are EXCELLENT, and rival their Gibson equivalents. Both guitars also have proper F holes, and are missing that stupid Lucille rotary switch. The non-"Pro" Alnico Classics in the Lucille are pretty lifeless, even for a muted jazz tone.

The Epiphone was my first electric guitar. I didn't have any knowledge about e-guitars (eg about different pickup types and so on). I bought it from my uncle for a very good price, that's why I chose it :D I usually play metal with it and the varitone switch comes in very handy when it comes to high gain settings. In position 3 it appears to me, that it gives some extra attack/aggressiveness. You're right about the muddiness. I can't get a really nice clean tone out of it. It always sounds a little dull. Maybe that's the "warm vintage tone" we are all looking for ;)

Helpful video Darrell. Thanks. Tried both out and heaps of others. Ended up getting a Hagstrom Super Viking. Had to tighten up a few things on it when I got it, cos its made in China. But I preferred the feel, sound and price. Plus the split tones add to the versatility. Would love to see you do some Hagstrom reviews in the future.
