What America has over China is the current tech and the lead over China. The sanctions have already hurt Chinese companies, but have also hurt Korean, Japanese, and Dutch companies from American blockade. This has forced the Chinese to start up their own semi industry. I think the American sanctions and blockade on China will really help China in the long term for some of its core tech industries. It will force them to innovate instead of purchasing or copying tech. Maybe in 5-10 years, we might see a different leader in this industry.

At least half of the people in America are smarter than Biden。To block China, Dutch and Korean companies are given time to complete existing orders until next year. If the United States makes it difficult for China to buy, instead of trying to block it completely. It may be more effective to force China to manufacture its own chips. The United States believes that China will never be able to produce them. However, Huawei's latest chips may only be 3 years behind the United States. What if China really succeeds?

There is one thing u failed to mention the most important in chip manufacturing which is your gallium and germanium who produces that who controls it. You also failed to mention that it turned out that when export bans were imposed it turned out China had already invested and acquired technology in producing 7nm chips. By limiting exports to China it just forced them to develop their own quicker than expected they did that by diverting the funds set purchasing chips to R&D which led to those chips being manufactured sooner. Then the US pressured ASML to stop exports of Lithography machines to China turns out china had already acquired enough knowledge and had already invested in producing their own and had already ordered many of ASML machines. Here is the kicker the US ban on export of chips has resulted in the bankrupting of its own chip companies and reducing their market share, while giving that market share to Chinese companies further has fostered a development and forced the increase of the manufacturing base in China. Now not only are they catching up in producing advanced chip making but their manufacturing base is becoming unrivaled soon they will be self sufficient then US firms will never claw that market share back and will find it hard to compete. Why do you think the US tried to woo TSMC to Arizona and it's now ending up in a disaster. This is simply because China blatantly told Taiwan the US was stealing their technologies and would follow that one with eroding their skills base then send Taiwan to war against China. The founder of TSMC realised it then pivoted by making it as difficult as possible for the US plant to succeed buying time and giving the Americans to invest more which they have issues doing. The Chinese then dealt a blow to the US bubble by releasing the Huawei Mate Pro without even building hype around the phone sending the US chips manufacturers into frenzy. This proved to the US that they are too late the Chinese can go it alone at this point leaving companies like ASML, Qualcomm, Intel scrambling to rescue their marketshare in China.
@asezangozo1914
@asezangozo1914 7 ай бұрын
This has now infuriated the US to a point where the only way to keep that dominance over this sector is to force China into a war so the US can destroy the Chinese chip industry like they did Noord-stream oil pipeline. The kicker here is that there are a few countries that want war with China in the Asian Pacific. And in terms of Geography the is no way the US takes on China and comes of unscathed it's a sure thing that the US Navy will be destroyed in the Pacific leading to the US Airforce being grounded of flying one-way trips because of the distance. South Korea, Japan find wanna take on China. This was proven when Kim Jong UN went to Russia and all of a sudden Japan wanted dialog as soon as possible with Kim. South Korea quaked. US is loosing power to China and now wants war with China but there are no takers.

I am no expert but from what I have heard, super computers and military equipments does not need advanced chips as spaces are not an issue. The 2 fields that required advanced chips are: AI and mobile phone. Also, let's not forget that China technology is very advanced now, evidently they passed US on patent applications this year. China is a manufacturer capital of the world, I think we can all agree on this point. So they have a buying power that no other countries can afford so lose this market means that chip makers will loses they vital income and eventually, a competitive edge???

Most military chips are in 100nm to 400nm range due to radiation hardening and extreme temperature requirement. Ultra advanced chips like those used in consumer phones would not be able to survive radiation hardening and extreme temperature requirement. Hey PBD, you always make good videos but this one, naah. It's all presenter's bias if not outright propaganda. When it comes to semiconductors and chips, China has the upper hand right now. Yes China used to be weak or low in the production of chips and semi-conductors but instead focused on advanced techs that use chips as inputs. And China has been the biggest consumer of chips, over 50% of global chips volume are consumed by China. So China provided the market for chips and semiconductors. When in 2020 US thought it can use semiconductors and chips to slow China down, US rung up its allies. Yes, China suffered shortage initially but went ahead to invest heavily in R&D and have gradually boosted its local production, in quality and quantity, to meet its domestic needs. Present situation, where we are now; China has cancelled chip orders from US, Japan, S Korea, Netherlands, Taiwan running close to $1T with a T. US is now sending emissaries to plead with China to reconsider the chip order cancellations. The so-called allies have broken up with US and are also at China's doorstep begging China, promising to supply every chip China needs even at cheaper rates. Some of these businesses are now running at 10% capacity, others temporarily shutdown production as unsold stock have piled up. Next chapter, China will mass produce and flood the global market with cheaper chips to kill off US and allies semiconductor businesses. Within the next 5 years, US and allies will be buying chips from China after their chip businesses have been wiped out. That's where the train is headed non-stop.

This is pretty misleading data that doesn’t support your initial issue of “trying to understand different level of chip manufacturing” that BCG didn’t include. Let’s break down some points by the way it was presented. First off, ASML has a strangle hold over lithography equipment bc of US subsidies that greatly benefitted the company during the 90s, so they may feel like an ally who ‘owes’ us as of today… but their current negative view on China can change in a second if it’s in their economic interest to do so. Same could be said for any other country (e.g. Japan, who had hope to be the leaders themselves). Also, saying ‘China doesn’t have access to such lithography equipment’ is potentially (don’t think we can confirm yet) contradicted by the fact that Huawei’s was able to get access to a 7nm chip. -The “Market Share of Global Semiconductor Supply” needs to be further examined. Every single company needs Assembly and Testing. That is to say, if chips are manufactured in US but then turn around and have to be shipped back to China for Assembly and Testing, you run the risk of IP being stolen. In terms of IP theft, China is known for state backed support of IP theft, a good case study is Micron. This kind of leads us back to export controls we initiated and our concerns that they haven’t been working as intended given Huawei... But getting back to the topic of A&T, China AND Taiwan being involved so heavily in this part of the manufacturing process is EXTREMELY concerning, given China’s intentions over Taiwan and their prior history of IP theft. -Fabless ‘supply’ could be concentrated in the US, but like you said, fabless companies don’t make anything. These companies simply design and send their designs to third party foundries for manufacturing (biggest are UMC and TSMC, in Taiwan). Like before, it is EXTREMELY concerning China AND Taiwan make up the majority of foundries as IP could be stolen. - Missing raw materials (I.e. rare earth/minerals) that are extremely concentrated in geopolitically sensitive areas. For example, China has over 90% of the global germanium supply. ANY restrictions on rare earth supply that China imposes (like they just did for germanium a month ago) is going to significantly affect the supply chain and/or the business landscape of US semiconductor companies. -Simply saying China being a “buyer” of most of these chips completely disregards the fact that most of this are white label goods (I.e. chips bought by China because they are need them to produce a finished good for another [likely foreign/US] company). The concern is that, with their “Made in China 2025” agenda which is looking to locally source the chips by injecting $150B worth of local to significantly reduce reliance on importing these chips, the foreign (e.g., US) semiconductor companies will lose significant streams of revenues to the point they may not be able to stay in business. You have to look at how much we rely on finished product exports from China to better understand the gravity of the situation. These are just a couple of points to take away on why we’re in a bit of a “oh shit” moment

There are 7 massive chip plants being built in the US right now. Problem is there isn't enough steel for all of them. A lot of that we got from Russia. One company is hoarding a lot of what we have but they are releasing some since they don't need it right now. Another issue, some of them are considered sovereign territories of the countries that own them, so don't think these are US chip plants. They are multi year projects so don't expect them to be cranking out chips anytime soon. One is a 15 year project that has only been worked on for the past few months.

US chip ban resulted in Huawei teaming up with SMIC (Chinese semiconductor) to create relatively advanced 7nm cell phone chip using older DUV lithography technology combined with advanced chip packaging technology. US chip ban also speeded up Chinese advances in graphene and photonic chip technology which are expected to replace silicon based chips since current state of technology using silicon wafer is very close to the theoretical limit of what is possible. China is actually a leader in photonics and graphene chip technology, as well as quantum computing. In fact, according to recent publication in Nature (top multi-disciplinary publication in the world), China actually leads the world in terms of volume of high quality research now, outpacing US.
