We explain underlying physics of exciton-polariton formation in a semiconductor microcavity. Fascinating fundamental effects can be observed in microcavity polariton systems, such as stimulated parametric scattering, non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity. We have a large research activity aimed at understanding and exploiting the light-matter interactions in exciton-polariton systems: ldsd.group.shef.ac.uk/research...

I am totally baffled by this amazing masterpiece animation. Thank you so much. can you tell me what is difference between plasmon and polaritons?
@quantumlightuniversityofsh5496
@quantumlightuniversityofsh5496 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! To answer your question, in general, polariton is a quasi-particle arising from the strong coupling of light (photons also described as electromagnetic waves) with some kind of electric or magnetic dipoles in the matter. In our video, we talked about exciton-polaritons -- polaritons which emerge from the strong coupling of photons and excitons, which are a type of dipole, inside a microresonator. Exciton-polariton can emerge also without the resonator but are a lot harder to observe and lack some interesting properties. When you refer to plasmons, do you mean 'surface plasmon-polaritons'? These occur when light (photons) strongly couples to dipoles of electric charges at the interface of a conductor and a dielectric (such as a metal-air interface). 'Surface plasmons' on their own are simply the oscillations (dipoles) emerging on the interface. Finally, 'plasmons' are quanta of oscillation of electric density inside a plasma. These three different 'plasmons' can be sometimes confused.
