Our #8 Castro-Ferreira is an absolute beast. He worked very hard with Jerome Kaino during the past 3 years, our youth coach at Stade Toulousain. The scary thing with him is actually his mindset, he got everything (rugby, mindset, work ethic, and already very mature in terms of athleticism and physicality). He scored 9 tries in Top 14 with Stade Toulousain this season. He also played big games like Champions Cup semifinal against Harlequins and was very close to play the final against Leinster Rugby (he didn’t play only because the coach chose a 5-3 split). GG france, played super well and just looked so controlled through it all. I think this shows while NZ are much improved this u20s year there is still a big gap in the development of the players missing, while this is a weaker french side most of their players have some top14 experience or are at least training with the senior sides. No one from the NZ team besides Rico Simpson has been in a super rugby environment proper yet, and most haven't even put on a jersey for NPC either. if we want the U20s to compete we need players like lakai and sititi hitting their breakout season while still being in the u20 frame, currently they all bloom outside the age gap window by a year often in their first season or two in super rugby. I think its mainly in our forwards that we lack the development, we have enough talent in the backs to tear teams apart at this grade but our missed tackles and lack of dominance in the collision cost us big time. 23 turnovers lost for nz vs 9 for france is insane. still NZ have some promising players coming through though, pledger, simpson, taele, Solomon, hutchinson, Tito-Harris etc all should be looking to break out into the super sides in the next couple of years. Rico especially needs to be in a team to learn but also play more at 10, he seems like a big prospect for us. would love to see Simpson and Pledger on the same side and build their combo to be honest. good luck in the final France, smash the English!

Some (Reus, Carbonneau, Castro Ferreira, Ferté and some were not even there when they could have played with this team (injured people like Gazzoti or Tuifua and others present with the A team in Argentina like Tuilagi or Attisogbe) This certainly comes from the policy implemented by the FFR for several years, the JIFF (Young people from French training). Each Pro team from the 2 pro divisions in France (top14 and prod2) must (under penalty of a fine or withdrawal of points) have an average over the entire season of 16 JIFF out of 23 players on the match sheet (for the 2023-2024 season . Imagine that 5 under 20 from France were picked by the A team in Argentina … on this under 20 team there is +230 professional match (in Top 14 and second division) so yes, because of the professional environment this team is certainly ahead. Castro Ferrera as played 15 games with Toulouse, that just won Top14 and Champions cup …

If Nz rugby is serious about u20 development and restoring a winning culture, they should select better coaches. When losing becomes a habbit at that age it will be transferred to senior rugby.

That look on your face at 1:19 when the the ref awards advantage to the opposition... when the opposition comes around off side and grabs the ball... new rules?
