I was an inner city school teacher my whole career. It is the most challenging job you can imagine. You have kids that come from households where parents are working nights and aren't available to help them with their studies. They are trying to survive. The kids have challenges with home life and poverty yet they are expected to pass standardized tests at the same average as children who are able to provide easily for their children. I was always astounded at this. And also as classroom teachers we were blamed for these children not being able to pass these tests at the same rate as affluent families who were able to provide adequate meals, time, stability etc. Furthermore the property taxes in the affluent neighborhoods provided them more access to programs and school supplies. I worked in an inner city school because I wanted to help. I was a child of an alcoholic, abusive father and struggling family ... and I wanted to reach out to those who were like me. It is an uphill battle. We care SO deeply yet we work with less funds. I had to provide school supplies to most of my students. F@#! people like the Don Jr. who sit on their lofty perches and judge the struggling families!

@@millionsasone I know an inner city elementary school principal that required all of her teachers to read "The Bell Curve" over one summer, and the input from the teachers I spoke to about it was impressive. It really opened their eyes to the struggles of their students, provided a different understanding and drastically lowered their frustration levels.

I had heard him as a senator several times, and was in such disbelief hearing he was at Auburn, that I had to go online to verify it. I was as shocked as my adult daughter was when I told her Rudy Giuliani was once a well-respected aNY mayor and encouraged the entire country to come together after 9/11. When I told her people were talking very positively about a presidential run for him, she laughed for quite a while. When she composed herself, she said she was laughing so hard at me -- At me thinking I could pass that hilarity off as truth! I had to make her go online to confirm Giuliani was once highly regarded. What's funny, is I can't believe it and I lived through it!

$49k a year is average? My ma just retired five years ago after 39 years a very active public educator in Iowa making less than $60k. And she wasn't the rush in at 8 dip at 4, weekends and summers off. She lived her career. Volunteering for committees and teaching summer school. Coming in early and starting late. Spending weekends working on projects and preparing lesson plans. It took her 30 + years to make $50k. Teachers are criminally under compensated.

This is the very reason why school funding cannot be determined by the property values, because rich people have much more influence on how laws are written by donating to politicians so that they do not have to pay taxes...in my humble opinion, the entire scheme is greatly imbalanced and needs action...

New Jersey offers the safest environment for its students and has one of the most successful educational systems in the entire country. Florida ranks 42nd in education, as it has one of the worst quality education systems, and its students are one of the least successful academically in the entire country.

Thanks to either negligent or at the other end of the spectrum overpowering parents, politicians make laws forbidding teachers to teach science because some parents don't 'believe' it history because some parents want to deny it art or music because that's 'grooming' English because literature is also 'grooming' math because that makes kids 'uncomfortable' The average American parent these days just wants education to be an autopilot babysitter service that just creates an unquestioning and obedient clone of them. Over and over these parents get outraged when children are taught to 'think' or 'question' and express 'opinions.' I'm not laying all the blame on parents either. Our corporate system drains parents of their very will to care with unpaid overtime and denial of benefits. The USA is the only 'first world' nation where households with children on average become less happy than households with children. Corporations deliberately want children to be trained to grow up as unquestioning and obedient adult slaves. Heck you may have noticed their push for child labor lately further removing any fair pay or benefits.

I have a cousin with a PhD in anthropology with a minor in Russian studies. She works in a bank, as head of their loan department. She did occasionally go on digs, but she has health issues now. So now, she verifies artifacts that are brought back from digs for the university of Kansas

As someone who began her teaching career, teaching for five years in an inner city school back in 1972, the "esteemed" Senator couldn't be more wrong! And I'm quite sure the atmosphere and stress in inner-city schools has not improved in those schools, in the intervening years!! I only left because we ended up building a house in the country, and it was just too far to drive. So then I ended up in a rural school. What those teachers considered a serious issue, would have been laughed at by the inner city teachers! Any teacher in the inner city should be paid twice as much as others, for the difficulty of the job. And this Senator is an utter fool, if he thinks all inner city teachers are folks of color!
