Senator: Top Garda roles should be filled by Irish citizens

Independent Senator Gerard Craughwell says he was "castigated" in the Seanad for saying that the vacant Deputy Garda Commissioner role should be filled by an Irish citizen: "No country anywhere would employ a foreign national to head up their State security service."

If you mean the civil service as a whole, would it matter to you if the receptionist in (for example) Dept of Defence, or if a cleaner in OPW was from Poland or Tanzania?

We are advertising on Pakistani TV for Garda recruits.😮 The Garda job was a highly sought after public service job years ago. But the wages and conditions are now dire. Solution. 1.Restore the pay and conditions to make the job attractive again. The shifts, work life balance needs to be addressed. Plenty of money available for every chancer that arrives in a dingy. 2. Fine Gael stop using the Gardai as a battering ram against the Irish people. That must be soul destroying to be ordered to baton charge your own people.

I agree with the principal that all Gard's should be an Irish national. But what amazes me, is the fact that Drew Harris swore an oath of loyalty to a foreign monarch. That oath is a life long oath of loyalty to the British monarchy. Then he crossed the border and swore an oath to protect and defend the Irish republic, and the citizens of this republic, so.
