I'm only a rural carrier in MO, so remember this when I provide my limited knowledge of the postal system: Since so much of processing mail is done by machines (very large machines--I was given a tour of the processing center in Springfield, last year, when I was hired), there's no mechanical system in each post office that could process local mail (did I mention the machines are large?), and there aren't enough bodies in any given post office to sort the likely hundreds of local letters that come in each day (depending upon the size of your community, of course). We're dependent upon automation to maintain even the poor speed alluded to in this video. We no longer live in the era where people sat at stations, hand-stamping and sorting mail to go to different locations. I'm not saying DeJoy is properly managing the resources as it is; our mail delivery truck is showing up 1-3 hours late at least once per week, which has most of us mail carriers out in the dark during the daylight savings months, in the cold. If the mail trucks were more consistently timely in their arrival each morning, I'd be all for having us clerks and carriers punching in at 6:30, instead of 7:30, to get us out earlier and back to the office before it gets dark. A few times, this past few months, the truck wouldn't show at a reasonable time, so all we had to deliver was Amazon pkgs. The system's crumbling, and I can't fathom all the cogs in the wheel that provide some semblance of normalcy, where a normal day should have your mail in your mailbox by 5 PM, so I'm not going to pretend to know the answers. Also, letters are getting less frequent to deliver. Maybe the increasing price of stamps is causing it. Perhaps relatively free communication via internet is causing it. Mayhap, younger generations don't cherish the services of the USPS like their forebears did. Less volume of postal mail means less revenue for the USPS. Carriers are delivering fewer and fewer things to mailboxes, but more and more packages are being deposited on porches, near garages, etc. I've read that the USPS is scrambling to generate revenue through new and different avenues, and that will likely mean an entirely different paradigm shift for my (new) profession. The USPS is cutting what rural carriers earn per mile driven on each route to offset the loss of millions of dollars to the operating budget. Quite frankly, I struggle imagining a future USPS as efficient and respected as we enjoyed it 20+ years ago. I now doubt my choice to continue this job, though I've been employed at at least two other shipping-sinking companies in my adult life . . . what's one more? I might start suffering a mental complex, thinking that it's my fault all these companies who've hired me went bankrupt or were bought out by a bigger fish. This response is only partially defending the system that sends your local mail in a 110-circuitous-mile journey. It's in no way defending DeJoy. I am in no position to offer alternatives.
@mikehunt93926 күн бұрын
@ not at all thank you so much for your response and your service that I know the most small town in mail carriers provide and have gone above and beyond what’s required of them just to provide decent service to us rural communities. I remember when we went from curbside mail delivery to just PO Box. It was a big change, but it definitely helped save a lot of jobs there’s no one solution thanks again and happy holidays
@Baker_king124 күн бұрын
Basically because that is the cheapest way to do it. It is cost efficient vs time efficient. Yes would it be better for your local mail person to see that your letter is local and not ship it to the hub for sorting… possibly but that would require manual sorting time which would clog up the system and require more man hours be worked at your local office. It is cheaper to use automation to do the actual sort but the machines that die that automation are at the hub. Why are they at the hub well because they are huge. They require specialized labor (people that know how to fix and service them) and the bigger more complicated machines are more cost effective where a smaller sorter at your local office may cost say $10k the bigger hub machine cost$250k but the big machine handles mail for 100 or 1000 offices so it only cost $2500 or $250 per office equivalent. Now these are hypothetical members the real numbers are probably much higher. But regardless centralization of the post office is arguably the most efficient way in terms of cost. The post office used to take 14-21 days to get a first class letter from one under the country to the other (the reason for the variance is that if it goes from NY to LA it’s 14 days because efficencies in the fact that that is a more common route where if it goes from say keywest florida to Moscow Idaho it will take longer because that isn’t a common route)it now takes five or less to get first class mail along almost any route. The thing is we’ve become accustomed to the speed, but it’s a speed that is dependent upon the use of the mail system. The more the mail system is used the more efficient. The hub and spoke scheme becomes the problem is we are sending less and less mail. With that reduction in mail traffic you run into issues with the efficiency of the logistics model and that’s why the Postal Service is having trouble less dependence upon services. It’s kind of a knock on effect because mail service was efficient, but now that people aren’t using it and using things like electronic statements and so on the mail service has to cut back, which leads to people cutting back on using it, which leads to getting cut back again. Basically the service is dated and while there are still people that use it, it is becoming a more and more difficult business model to justify and people expect it to stay cheap but the reason it was cheap was due to economies of scale. It no longer has those economies of scale so they either have to increase rates or cut service levels and the public has been pretty upset with them increasing rates so they’re only other option is to cut service levels.

Was a pretty important package, so I actually went to the warehouse itself and explained my situation, met some very nice individuals and they got my package for me. It's like we regular folks need to take care of delivering the mail ourselves. 🤔 Dejoy got paid $533,146 last year, and he received Ten Billion Dollars to deliver the mail. Just stop paying taxes.
