The numbers on the weapons might not be big but youve got to think that 30 damage is just under 1/3 of a default worm's life. If all weapons did 50+ damage, the games would be over insanely quick

Actually some cars from the 90's and earlier are considered safer by some. As they are made of metal, which means the car can take more damage. And possibly save your life. Where as compared to cars made today, while they do have more safety stuff that can protect you. They are made of cheap metal, and will fold up like a accordion depending on the seriousness of the crash.

Cars are designed to crumple as a safety feature actually. The crumpling allows the car to safely absorb the energy of the crash without said energy passing in to the passenger compartment, instead the car is slowed with a minimum of the energy of the crash being passed on to the rest of the vehicle while most of it is instead focused into the crumple zone. In contrast, old cars which are built more solidly, do not crumple at all, which means more of the kinetic force is passed on to the rest of the vehicle, including the passenger compartment, with minimum mitigation. Older cars do have some benefit, namely in their lower mechanical complexity making it more plausible for less specialised individuals to do comprehensive fixes, but improved safety isn't one of them.
