SEND THEM! F-35A MASS TAKE OFF RAF LAKENHEATH USAF • 48TH FIGHTER WING 493D & 495TH FIGHTER SQUADRON

Twelve F-35A Lightning II comprising of the 493d Fighter Squadron (Grim Reapers) and the 495th Fighter Squadron (Valkyries) at RAF Lakenheath request and are cleared for quick climbs. They "launch" one after the other in a mass takeoff. This is the second time that TCS have seen 12 F-35As takeoffs but these were all cleared for quick climbs.
493rd are the legendary GRIM REAPERS. They were briefly deactivated with their F-15C and F-15D in April 2022 but have been re-equipped with the F35A.
The 495th Fighter Squadron who became the first overseas USAF to operate the F-35A...ooh yeah! They were reactivated after 30 years on the 1st October 2021
Which is your favourite at RAF LAKENHEATH, the F-15E or the F-35A?
The F-35s at Lakenheath are the A variant and they have some very unique characteristics of the three main variants. They have a 'Vulcan-like' howl and although they cannot hover, they are the variant of the ABC that can pull +9Gs. They are incredible to watch and hear.

Quickclimbs are awesome to experience from right under the nozzle with maximum power and maximum noise, but you don't get the perspective from this side. Only from a little further away do you get a sense of how incredibly FAST those 40,000 pounds of thrust throw these beauties in the air. Go F-35! Go Reapers! Go Valkyries! Thank you 48th FW! I was stationed at Upper Heyford 1986-1991. The Hardened Aircraft Shelters (HAS) at UH and LN are Big and normally held only one F-111 which is larger than a F-35 especially with their wings swept forward. Can you tell how many F-35's they keep in one HAS at LN? Just curious. Thanks

4min 37 secs..that fighter does not appear to have Luneburg lens radar reflector things installed on the main body...unlike the rest of the F35's. (It's the small dark grey lumps just before the vertical tail and also on the belly.

No, it is not usual. This amount of afterburner uses up a lot of fuel, which may shorten the training mission duration. Unless of course they can top up at an air-to-air tanker.

Take off's like that at Lakenheath are normally restricted to Friday mornings. Occasionally they do it at other times, but permission has to be sought to do so. I have heard the pilots ask to do a performance take-off over the radio and its been turned down.

It’s usually on Fridays for our QUICK CLIMB FRIDAY show. Of course all Quick Climbs/Unrestricted Climbs have to be cleared by ATC.
